ASP Grade 2 Quiksilver Pro Junior Contestants Gear Up

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 April, 2008 : - - Durban - The cream of South African junior surfers will be getting ready for their own event within the Quiksilver Pro Durban event program, as the Quiksilver Pro Junior Grade 2 ASP event kicks off this Friday 11 April. This event, with US10,000 in it, will be fiercely contested amongst the local contingent, as well as the international juniors who will be competing.

The highly rated Clay Marzo, who was the sponsor’s wildcard for the event, has had to withdraw due to injury. He has been replaced by the red-hot Mikey February from Kommetjie, Cape Town. Mikey has been impressing everyone with his recent blistering performances in a number of local junior events and is a worthy recipient of the this wildcard. Marzo, from Maui, was obviously disappointed with having to withdraw but his disappointment is February’s elation.

Durban surfers who will have local advantage are the likes of Kyle Beach and Chad Du Toit, as well as Shawn Dennis, who all call New Pier home. Other Durban-based surfers who always surf exceptionally well at New Pier are Kyle Lane and Beyrick De Vries from Umhlanga.

Cape Town has solid representation from the likes of former King Of The Groms winner Matthew Bromley, and the aforementioned Mikey February, as well as Brendon Gibbens who has it in him to win such junior events.

There are also some top surfers from the Cape St Francis who have entered. The polished Nick Godfrey is always turning heads these days with his fast surfing and power moves. He will be joined by Dane and Dale Staples, two more top surfers from the St. Francis area. The lone Japanese junior surfer in the mix is Shota Nakamura, a seasoned campaigner who could easily cause upsets in the event.

These surfers will be joined by the winner of the Komunity Project Future Stars event, who will be awarded a wildcard. The Komunity Project Future Stars is a surf-off amongst the top eight surfers selected from Surfing South Africa’s transformation and development program. The final of the Quiksilver Pro Junior will be surfed before the final of the main event on Sunday 20 April.

The Quiksilver Pro Junior is part of the Quiksilver Pro Durban and will be available on live webcast on the event mini site quikprodurban.com as well as on mobile phone live feed – browse quikprodurban.mobi on your mobile browser.
