Portugal's Carcavelos Beach hosts Volcom's Rumblefish
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 April, 2008 : - - After the previous editions in Amado beach in the southern city Sagres, it was time for the famous Carcavelos beach to receive its first Volcom Rumblefish Surf Series. After all, this is the main beach in Lisbon city area, the one where Portuguese surfing started back in the 70’s and home of many national surfing stars.
The first VQS Rumblefish in Carcavelos took place on Easter holiday, the weekend of 22nd and 23rd March 2008, and we can proudly say it was a cool and successful event!
For everyone that escaped the family Easter lunches and usual traveling, and wanted some fun, the VQS Rumblefish Carcavelos was the right place to be and definitely a good choice for the Easter weekend. We had two cool days with lots of surf, rock, art, games, free food and drinks, giveaways and prizes.
The contest had 97 surfers divided in the usual 4 divisions: 37 Open, 32 Junior, 12 Groms, and 16 Girls, all coming from different beaches and cities across the country. Saturday morning all divisions started to show off their best manuevers in small 0.5m (knee-high) waves. Unfortunately we had some strong offshore winds and some rain, but conditions improved a lot in the afternoon with high tide and the offshores calming down.
While some surfers were destroying the waves, others were having fun by the contest tents, painting in an improvised ‘gallery’, fighting for Volcom giveaways, eating candies, fruit, pizzas or just recharging their energies with free drinks from Red Bull and B juices. Sunday morning the waves finally arrived, and surfers had nice fun waves all day long.

The sun was shinning and the offshore wind was perfect. In the Open division, (the most crowded!) the highlights came from Hugo Zagalo, Alexandre Sabroso (aka Marcos Anastacio), Robertson Goncalves, Pablo Ferreira, Francisco Lima, Paulo Almeida, Kalu Oliveira, Miguel Mouzinho and local free-surfer Filipe Fernandes. The winner ended up to be Hugo Zagalo with clean moves in a difficult 6 surfers final.
The Junior division was on fire and we had a lot of good young kids. The best waves came from finalists Diogo Appleton, Luís Eyre, Francisco Sousa and Henrique Rosa. But in the end it was Luís Eyre that found the best waves in the final heat and destroyed them like a maniac, taking the win with a big smile in this much disputed division.
In the Groms division Rui Henriques was the main kid to watch, and he won the event with a serious advantage over all other competitors. All other young finalists Joao Abreu, Antonio Henriques were ripping as well, specially the 10 year old Guilherme Fonseca that impressed everyone with his style and maneuvers.
We had 16 Girls competing, and some experienced names like Francisca Tenreiro, Carina Duarte, Francisca Sousa, Nicole Mota and Marta Santos didn’t make the finals. All the 4 finalists made a great contest and they are all to be mentioned: Maria Goncalves, Mariana Figueiredo, Sonia Pires and Carolina Guerreiro. The winner was Carolina Guerreiro, she found the best waves in the final and didn’t miss the chance to be the first girl to win the VQS in Carcavelos.
We decided to give the Best Trick Award to Kalu Oliveira for a cool alley-oop 360º in the Open division final. Congratulations to all winners and finalists! They all received fantastic prizes from Volcom and our partners, and they qualified for the first ever Volcom Euro Championships, 19-20 April 2008 in Anglet, France.

During the event we planned some fun moments and games like a ‘search for the Volcom Easter eggs (rocks)’ to win some Volcom stuff. Kids also entered a fun race with their feet taped that seemed more like a fighting race, and we had a Frisbee competition as well for Volcom tshirts, sweats, boardshorts, caps, CDs, and stickers.
The best prize was left to the end of the contest, and the first kid running to the water and swimming with his clothes on to the outside, would receive a brand new surfboard from our friends at Polen surfboards. The board was hand painted by the kids at the beach during the event and this was a cool way to end this VQS with everyone having fun. The best runner/swimmer was Pedro Correia and although he seemed like a wet Rumblefish, he was smiling with his new customized surfboard!
So that’s it! This was our first VQS Volcom Rumblefish in Carcavelos, a very cool event with lots of fun… and we’re already thinking about the next one! See you all soon!
