Brandon Roberts wins 2008 WP Open of Surfing in excellent Long Beach surf
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 April, 2008 : - - Brandon Roberts of Sun Valley won the 2008 Western Province Open of Surfing and the R2000 winners cheque in excellent four foot surf at Long Beach in Kommetjie Saturday.
Although Roberts won all his heats on the way to the final he left the best for last scoring an almost perfect 9.83 point ride to secure the title, his first PST victory since winning the 2005 O'Neill Cold Water Classic. Three of the five judges allocated Roberts the magic 10 points while two gave him 9.5.
This ride and his next highest ride of around 8 points put him into a solid lead and with five minutes to go it was clear that none of his opponents would catch him. 2006 WP Open champion Matthew Kruger of Durban came second on a split decision ahead of third placed Matt Bromley of Kommetjie and standout surfer of the event, Wesley Grey, was fourth.
Grey's early round form made him the outright winner of the WP Surfing Blowing Up Award and R500 cash. The beaten semi finalists in this 1A Surfing South Africa Pro Surf Tour event were fifth placed Shaun Payne (St Francis) and Gary van Wieringen (Warner Beach) with talented junior Jarred Veldhuis and fellow Kommetjie surfer Adam Hansen ending seventh.
The 2008 WP Open was funded by Surfing South Africa and WP Surfing and supported by Long Beach's famous 783 Restaurant.
