Rosewall and Laing take round 2 of Quiksilver State Junior Titles

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 April, 2008 : - - Todd Rosewall of Jan Juc and Jess Laing of Phillip Island have emerged on top of Victoria's best U/18 surfers to win their respective divisions in round two of the Quiksilver State Junior Titles held in rough two-metre waves at Woolamai Beach, Phillip Island at the weekend.

Showcasing his experience as a seasoned competitor, Rosewall did not drop a heat all event. Rosewalls final score of 9.60 points only narrowly defeated round one winner and local favourite Mitch Baker (Phillip Island) on 9.25 points, but it proved to be enough in the testing conditions. All competitors dodged solid two-metre closeout waves that pounded the contest bank in order to find waves with scoring potential.

Rosewall was very satisfied in his result: Im really happy to take the win and make the most of it. The conditions were tough, it was hard to finding peeling waves, he said.  It has been a busy year for Rosewall, finding time in between VCE to focus on a repeat of his efforts two years ago when he was selected to represent Victoria at the annual Quiksilver Australian Junior Titles, which he went on to win.

Baker meanwhile, at just 15 and in his first year in the blue-ribbon U/18 Boys division continues to impress. Bakers power turns and competitive savvy saw him notch up some of the highest wave scores of the event, yet in the decider luck did not fall his way.I really needed another score in the finals and some luck in picking off better scoring waves, said Baker.

Elliot Mann (Torquay) surfed his way into third place with Johnno Spitteri (Torquay) finishing fourth. The U/18 Girls final saw Laing register the highest individual wave score of the day with an 8.50 out of a possible 10 when she caught a solid, long peeling wave that allowed her to carve a series of tight turns. Laing finished with a total two-wave combined final score of 10.40 points, ahead of Georgia Fish (Flinders) on 7.75 points in second, Sophie Collins (Phillip Island) third and Ella Demos (Phillip Island) in fourth.

It was a fantastic final and thanks to all the girls who made it a great competition, said Laing. The U/16 Boys final was won by Harry Mann (Torquay) who ripped up every wave that came his way. Mann secured a final tally of 12.00 points to easily outpoint Marcus Wright (Phillip Island) in second on 6.85 points, Jamie Powell (Torquay) in third on 5.40 points and Tom Cole (Phillip Island) fourth on 5.35 points.

In the U/16 Girls Nikki Van Dijk (Phillip Island) was first with India Payne (Phillip Island) second. Both girls displayed confidence and surfing tenacity in dealing with the choppy waves and testing rips. In the U/13 Boys and Girls divisions it was all about having fun. Competitors shook hands at the end of every heat, a healthy reminder of good-spirited competition for the tenacious and determined older ranks.

The third and final round of the 2008 Quiksilver State Junior Titles will be held May 10th on the Surfcoast. The best performing surfers will be selected to represent Victoria at the Quiksilver Australian Junior Titles scheduled for the Margaret River region of West Australia in December. The Quiksilver State Junior Titles, Victoria is proudly supported by Play it Safe by The Water and Vic Health.
