European Leader San Segundo Qualifies for Round 2 of Vendée Pro    > Francaise ci-dessous

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 April, 2008 : - - La Sauzaie – The Vendée Pro, an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 4-Star event, got underway today at the famous reef break of La Sauzaie in 2 ft (0.5 meter) clean waves. Gathering 96 surfers from around the world for a week of competition on the West Coast of France, the 7th edition of the Vendée Pro offered up a day of hot action with Heats 1 to 7 of Round 1 being held in the afternoon.

Marcos San Segundo (EUK), current ASP European Pro Surf Tour leader, qualified for Round 2 with a second place finish behind British surfer Johnny Fryer (GBR). San Segundo, 20, who is leading the European Tour for the first time ever in his young career, managed to secure a Round 2 birth despite the small waves on offer.

“It is something new for me to be a leader among the experienced European surfers,” San Segundo said. “I am not feeling any pressure however and I felt good out there. I just want to keep up the good work and will see how things go.”

San Segundo, who won his first ever WQS event last month in Tapia, will now meet Darren Turner (AUS) and European veteran Kepa Acero (EUK) in Round 2.  “I am not really thinking about my opponents or results,” San Segundo said. “Winning the first event of the year was excellent for confidence and I will take heats one by one as I did in the past. Nothing changes.”

It was a day of low scores and average surfing at La Sauzaie, the famous french reef not delivering good potential waves. Bobby Morris (USA), who won Heat 1 of Round 1 ahead of Karlos Gomez (EUK) and Rafael Batista (BRA), posted the highest heat tally of the day with 13.00 points out of possible 20 and will now surf against top seeded surfer Eric Geiselman (USA), Oier Illaramendi (EUK) and Yannick De Jager (NLD).

Former top competitor and surfing legend Richie Collins (USA) surfed in Round 1 of the Vendée Pro, coming back to professional surfing after a decade away from tour. Collins, who was a leader of surfing’s renewal in the 90s, won Heat 2 of Round 1 against 20-year-old Yannick De Jager (NLD) to advance to Round 2 where he will meet top seeded and promissing French surfer Vincent Duvignac (FRA).

The Vendée Pro will restart tomorrow Wednesday, April 16, at 10.30 AM at La Sauzaie. Tamayo Perry (HAW) and Liam McNamara, renowned Hawaiian Pipeline chargers, will get their chance in Round 1 of the Vendée Pro when competition resumes.

Le leader du circuit européen San Segundo se qualifie pour le second tour du Vendée Pro.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 April, 2008 : - - La Sauzaie – Le Vendée Pro, une épreuve 4 étoiles du circuit World Qualifying Series (WQS) de l’Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) a démarré aujourd’hui sur le célèbre spot de La Sauzaie dans des vagues propres de 0.5 mètre.

Ayant attiré 96 surfeurs du monde entier pour une semaine de compétition sur la côte ouest française, la 7e édition du Vendée Pro a offert au public venu nombreux de l’action avec les séries 1 à 7 du premier tour qui ont eu lieu dans l’après midi.

Marcos San Segundo (EUK), l’actuel leader de l’ASP European Pro Surf Tour, s’est qualifié pour le second tour en terminant second derrière le britannique Johnny Fryer. San Segundo, 20 ans, qui est en tête du circuit européen pour la première fois de sa jeune carrière a réussi à tirer son épingle du jeu malgré les petites conditions de vagues.

“C’est quelque chose de nouveau pour moi d’être le leader parmi tous ces surfeurs européens d’expérience,” a déclaré San Segundo. “Je ne ressens pas de pression particulière et je me suis senti bien à l’eau. Je veux simplement continuer sur ma lancée et je verrais comme cela se passe.”

San Segundo, qui a remporté sa toute première épreuve WQS le mois dernier à Tapia, sera opposé à  Darren Turner (AUS) et au vétéran européen Kepa Acero (EUK) au second tour. “Je ne pense pas vraiment à mes adversaires ni à mes résultats,” a poursuivit San Segundo. “Remporter la première épreuve de la saison a été excellent pour la confiance et je vais prendre les séries une par une comme je l’ai fait par le passé. Rien ne change.”

Ce fut une journée de petits scores et de vagues moyennes à La Sauzaie, le célèbre plateau rocheux n’ayant pas offert aux surfeurs de vagues avec assez de potentiel. Bobby Morris (USA), qui a remporté la série 1 devant Karlos Gomez (EUK) et Rafael Batista (BRA), s’est adjugé le meilleur total de points de la journée avec 13.00 points sur les 20 possibles et surfera contre les têtes de série Eric Geiselman (USA), Oier Illaramendi (EUK) et Yannick De Jager (NLD).

L’ancien surfeur de l’élite et légende vivante du surf Richie Collins (USA) a surfé dans ce premier tour du Vendée Pro, faisant son retour dans le surf professionnel après une décennie d’absence. Collins, qui a été le leader de la nouvelle génération dans les années 90, a remporté la série 2 face à Yannick De Jager (NLD) pour se qualifier au second tour où il rencontrera l’un des espoirs du surf français, également tête de série, Vincent Duvignac (FRA).

Le Vendée Pro débutera demain  mercredi 16 Avril à  10h30 à La Sauzaie. Tamayo Perry (HAW) et Liam McNamara, les célèbres têtes brûlées hawaïennes de Pipeline rentreront en lice au premier tour demain.
