Goodwave Conditions Approaching Durban
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 April, 2008 : - - Durban – The magic of surf forecasting and the intuition of surf forecaster Spike have combined to make a ‘Heads Up’ call for the Quiksilver Goodwave 2008.
Tuesday 22 April, just two days after the end of the Quiksilver Pro Durban event is set to be completed, looks like the day for the event, with smooth seas, four-to-six foot conditions, variable but favourable winds, good tides and good sandbanks all coming together. These days are rare and only happen a couple of days a year, but all signs seem to be pointing to Tuesday being the day.
The event is an 11-month waiting period invite-only contest that requires one good day of surfing at the fabled New Pier in Durban. The invitee list includes former event winners Simon Nicholson, Warwick Wright and Antonio Bortoletto and all the usual suspects of top New Pier surfers.
Along with the locals and event winners this year the entry list has been expanded to allow surfers from across the country to compete amongst the premier waves of New Pier. Surfers like Simon Fish, Keegan Nel, Dave Richards and Warwick Heny have all been included to come up against the New Pier locals on their home turf.
First prize has been raised to a very healthy R75,000 for first place, yet the entry fee has remained at the traditional one Rand. The event website - goodwave.co.za – is live with daily surf reports from New Pier, fresh images, rider profiles and media update sections.
The surf forecaster Spike is extremely confident of the upcoming good day, and Quiksilver are keen to run the event. Barry Wolins from Quiksilver is excited about the possibility of running one of the most popular events in the country again. “Even though we’re still busy with the Quiksilver Pro Durban, and surfing has received so much exposure recently, we want to run this event.,” said Wolins.
“The Quiksilver Goodwave has a history of being a real event and an event for the surfers, and this is what it is all about. Tuesday looks like the first real Goodwave swell of the year, and if we wake up on Tuesday morning and it’s all happening at New Pier, the event will run.”
So invited surfers and interested parties, this is your wake-up call. Keep your eyes on the website, and register for sms updates on the site to find out when the event is going to take place. The Quiksilver Goodwave will be featured on an upcoming episode of Boardriders TV, the cutting edge locally-produced surf, skate and snow show. The Quiksilver Goodwave is presented by Virgin Mobile in association with Resolution.
