North Beach To Host Spectacular International Lizzard Nandos Surf Pro presented by the Weekend Witness
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 April, 2008 : - - The internationally rated Lizzard Nandos Surf Pro presented by the Weekend Witness will run at North Beach, Durban from 15-18 May. The event includes a 1 Star Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Africa World Qualifying Series Men’s contest, a Grade 1 Pro Junior International event, and Women’s 2A Pro division with a total of R121 500 ($15 000) prize money on offer.
This annual surf event, now in its sixth year, has changed venue from New Pier back to the popular surfing spot of North Beach in Durban where the inaugural Lizzard Surf Pro took place. Mike Frew, Lizzard’s Marketing Manager, said they “are very excited about the new venue as it promises a clean, natural amphitheatre with all the facilities”.
The event, due to it being held in mid May, has a good chance of benefitting from early winter KZN offshore winds, which emphasizes Lizzard’s claim that their “focus for the event is on the surfers”.
With New Pier locals apparently unhappy with the increasing number of events being held at their beloved local break, and in an attempt to satisfy even those surfers not taking part in the event, Mike Frew of Lizzard said that the move to North Beach “makes sure [they] are not involved in all that and the locals can stay stoked”.
This year’s event will be showcasing some of SA’s finest WQS campaigners, such as Gavin Roberts (Scottburgh), Warwick Wright (Durban) and two-time Lizzard Pro Surf champ David Weare (Durban).
In the women’s division, recently crowned women’s World Masters Surfing champ Heather Clark (Port Shepstone) will be looking be looking to dominate at her sponsor’s title event. Clark, who is a Lizzy team rider, is one of SA’s strongest competitors and has collected a host of prestigious international titles such as former World tour surfer, and Hawaiian Triple Crown winner.
Clark will be up against other Lizzy riders Sarah Maritz (2007 SA Champ and former ASP Africa Champion) and Lizzard Nandos Surf Pro defending champ Nikita Robb (East London), in what looks to be a very close division.
With no other WQS events occurring anywhere in the world on the weekend of the Lizzard Nandos event (15-18 May), nearly all of the South African mens WQS campaigners are entering, guaranteeing that the standard of surfing is going to be world class.
The Lizzard website, lizzardsurf.net has a page dedicated to the contest where pictures, daily updates and future press releases will be available. The supporting sponsors for the event are Bavaria, Nestle Pure Life Water, and Bokomo. The event is organised by Nerve Events.
