Lay-Day For Brothers Neilsen Pro Junior

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 April, 2008 : - - Gold Coast -- Day one of the Brothers Neilsen Pro Junior surfing event has been declared a lay-day by organizers due to small wave conditions at Burleigh Heads today. The $23,000 event has a seven-day waiting period for the best possible surf until Sunday May 4th and only requires four days in which to finalize both the U/20 male and female divisions.

Steeped in prestige, the Brothers Neilsen Pro is the eighth stop of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) sanctioned Australasian Pro Junior Series. Australia’s best Pro Junior surfers including ratings leader Stuart Kennedy (Lennox Head), Lincoln Taylor (Stradbroke Is.), Julian Wilson (Coolum), Owen Wright (Culburra) and Heath Joske (Valla) will all compete.

The Gold Coast’s biggest U/20 names have also entered including Nick Vasicek (Coolangatta), Blake Ainsworth (Coolangatta), Mitch Crews (Currumbin), Chris Bennetts (Main Beach) and locally based Tahitian heavyweight Tamaroa McComb (Coolangatta).

Adding to the event’s already high stakes is the three-star rated girls’ division. 32 of the country’s hottest female surfers including teen sensation and defending champion Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa, NSW).

The main contest site is Burleigh Heads but the event does have the option of going mobile for the best surf from Southport Spit to Duranbah Beach. Organisers will re-access surf conditions again tomorrow morning for a possible start. Brothers Neilsen Surf stores were founded in Surfers Paradise in 1971 by brothers Paul and Rick Neilsen. They currently have 11 stores throughout Queensland.
