Slow start in Scotland, Old Guard lays it down: Al Hunt reflects

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 April, 2008 : - - What could have been a week full of upsets in Scotland has turned into what could be only called a very slow start. After four days at the O’Neill Highland Pro in Scotland, only 20 heats have been run in small but contestable waves at Brims Nest.

Some of the heat winners are the old guard still laying it down, Fabio Gouveia (BRA) and Sunny Garcia (HAW). A couple of unfortunate losers that would have been expecting a better result were Luke Cheadle (AUS) and Nathan Carroll (HAW).

Swell predictions are favorable for the coming days so hopefully the event can get into some serious running of heats. The event has until the 30th to finish so still plenty of days left but not much more down time for the number of heats still to be run.

The decision for this year to cut back these ASP WQS 6-Star Prime events to a maximum of 144 competitors has paid off with the Quiksilver Pro in Durban needing to cancel for a day while 30 plus guys boards arrived and now in Scotland small waves that the surfers would prefer not to compete in.

Meanwhile, a two hour flight south of Scotland at the Rip Curl Pro Junior at Peniche in Portugal, the famous Super Tubes break was lived up to its name with pumping surf all event. The eventual winner, Marc Lacomare from France was able to overcome Reunion’s Medi Veminardi for his first career win.

Trestles will host the 6.0 Lowers Pro along with the Oakley Pro Junior starts on the 29th with a full draw of 192 plus over 60 alternates hoping for a lot of injuries, flat tires, missed flights, etc. so some of them can get a start. The junior event has a 48-man draw so there will be a lot of surfers at Trestles this coming week.

Some of the ASP Men’s Tour big names competing are Taylor Knox (USA), Chris Ward (USA), Fred Patacchia (HAW), Adriano de Souza (BRA) and Ben Bourgeois (USA).Next week all the results from Scotland and Trestles will be in, so expect to see some movement in the ratings.
