SA’s Top ASP WQS Surfers to Contest Lizzard Nando’s Surf Pro presented by the Weekend Witness
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 May, 2008 : - - May 15 – 18 will see the staging of the Lizzard Nando’s Surf Pro, presented by the Weekend Witness. It will be showcasing South Africa’s premier surfing talent, with a 1 Star ASP WQS Men’s division, Grade 1 ASP International Pro Junior division, and Surfing South Africa Pro Surf Tour 2A rated Women’s division to be contested. The event, now in its sixth year, will be held at Durban’s North Beach, and offers a total of R121 500 ($15 000) prize money.
The event is ideally placed in both the local and international surfing tour calendars. With no other WQS events occurring anywhere in the world on the weekend of the Lizzard Nandos event (15-18 May), the top 10 South African men’s WQS campaigners are entering, guaranteeing that the standard of surfing is going to be world class.
The field includes names such as David Weare (Durban), Greg Emslie (East London), Damian Fahrenfort (Durban), Warwick Wright (Durban), Antonio Bortoletto (Durban), Gavin Roberts (Scottburgh), Daniel Redman (Durban) and Rudy Palmboom (Bluff).
Mike Frew, Lizzards Marketing Manager, is obviously ecstatic about the presence of “SA’s top WQS competitiors” in their event. “It is also awesome to have Dave Weare surfing, he is killing it on the WQS so it adds a wow factor to the event”, added Frew. Speaking on behalf of the ASP, Colin Fitch (Event Contest Director and ASP Operations Manager) believes that “the standard of surfing is going to be extremely high”.
Additionally, due to the event being held in mid May, the event has a good chance of benefiting from early winter KZN offshore winds, which emphasizes Lizzard’s claim that their “focus for the event is on the surfers”.
The Pro Junior event also promises to deliver some explosive action. With ASP Africa Pro Junior tour points up for grabs, the final of the junior event (on Friday 16 May) is not to be missed. The junior prize giving will be held on the 16 May, with the men’s and ladies finals and prize giving being held on Sunday 18 May.
The Lizzard website, lizzardsurf.net has a page dedicated to the contest where pictures, daily updates and future press releases will be available. Also, for those who are not able to make it down to the contest, heat draws and heat scores will be regularly updated on the website.
The supporting sponsors for the event are Bavaria, Nestle Pure Life Water, and Bokomo. The event is organised by Nerve Events.
