Big Performances on Day 1 Koastalkaos.com Pro

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 May, 2008 : - - The inaugural Koastalkaos.com Pro got underway today with a solid international contingent leading the way through Rounds 1 and 2 today in onshore two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves on offer at Oceanside Harbor’s North Jetty.

Stop No. 4 on the 2008 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North American Men’s Tour, the Koastalkaos.com Pro is into it’s first season as an ASP-sanctioned event, and already enjoyed a solid day of competition with some of the top surfers in the world turning up to do battle.

Manuel Selman (Chile) put the rest of the 96-man draw on notice today, posting a 9.50 out of a possible 10 for detonating on one of the lefthanders of the day with his patented forehand attack. Selman will now face Californian’s Noi Kaulukukui (Santa Cruz, CA) and Matt Pagan (Los Angeles, CA) along with Golden Depesa (North Shore, HI) in his Round 2 heat when competition resumes tomorrow.

Nathaniel Curran (Ventura, CA), a marquee surfer on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS), was another standout today, matching Selman for the highest single wave score of the day, a 9.50 out of a possible 10, en route to collecting the day’s high heat total of a 17.25 out of a possible 20. Curran will see Zach Keenan (Cardiff, CA), Riley Metcalf (San Clemente, CA) and Gabe Garcia (Carlsbad, CA) next in their Round 3 heat.

Magnum Martinez (Caracas, VEN) brought his world-class act to the Oceanside beachbreaks today, posting an impressive 16.25 out of a possible 20 to advance through to Round 3. Martinez will next battle Anthony Petruso (Malibu, CA), Shey Yates (Encinitas, CA) and Matt Mohagen (Los Angeles, CA) in their upcoming Round 3 bout.

Richie Collins (Newport Beach, CA), a former competitor on the ASP World Tour and looking to requalify back onto the Dream Tour, proved he still had the chops today, blasting an Oceanside Harbor righthander for an impressive 9.25 out of a possible 10. When competition resumes, Collins will square off against Jeremy Sommerville (Solana Beach, CA), Dane Zaun (Los Angeles, CA) and Ryan Burch (San Diego, CA) in the opening heat of Round 3.

Tomorrow will culminate the Koastalkaos.com Pro, crowning a champion in the inaugural ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 1-Star event.
