Perranporth serves up small perfection for Rip Curl GromSearch
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 May, 2008 : - - The second leg of the UK GromSearch series was held over the weekend in small but perfect waves at Perranporth beach, Cornwall. Over 100 competitors of all ages – some as young as 8 years old turned up to compete.
Rip Curl hosted this - the 6th annual GromSearch event in Cornwall – the English leg of the 3 part UK and Ireland series. The Rip Curl GromSearch series in a global Rip Curl event with the same taking place throughout the rest of Europe over the next month.
Kids are encouraged to enter categories covering all age groups -Under 12’s, 14’s and 16’s with first place in the under 16’s Boys and Girls winning a position in the UK and Ireland finals to be held at the Rip Curl Boardmasters scheduled between August 4-10th.
Stand out performances this year went to Luke Dillon from Newquay who entered both the Under 14’s and under 16’s categories winning both! Luke entered the Rip Curl GromSearch series last year and won the Under 12’s category so this years win added to last years, means than Luke is the first grom to win all 3 boys categories over 2 consecutive years.
Other great performances for the weekend came from Megan Burns who won the Under 16’s Girls division defeating hot favourites Gabi Rowe, Zoe Sheath and local charger Daisy Docking from St Agnes.
Megan also competed in the Welsh Grom Search held 2 weeks ago in Porthcawl winning the same division but having to surf in the English leg as she did not qualify for the UK & Ireland finals because rules state you have to be born and living in the country where you win to get the place in the finals representing each country.
Megan said after her win: I’m was a little bit disappointed after winning the Welsh leg and being told after that it didn’t qualify me to win a place at the grand finals in Newquay during the Rip Curl Board masters as I wasn’t from Wales, so I’m absolutely stoked to come and take part in the English leg and win securing my position!
Special thanks goes out to Joel Grey of Surf Solutions for providing training sessions and surf coaching to some keen up and coming juniors during the event. Next leg of the series will be held in Lahinch, Co Clare, Ireland on the 14th & 15th June.
