Day one at Trigg Beach in Western Australia sees top seeded surfers progress with ease
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 May, 2008 : - - The first day of the 8 star ASP SunSmart Pro Junior event has bounced down at Trigg Beach in Western Australia with clean 1.0-1.5m meter waves on offer. Despite some inconsistency, Trigg provided competitors with the opportunity to impress the judges with some polished displays of surfing.
Number one seed Stuart Kennedy, (Lennox Head, NSW) smashed his first heat and left his fellow entrants stunned with a 7.75 point ride and a back up 6.90 ride to secure his first place win. Kennedy opened the day the flair and style that has him currently holding down first place on the ASP Pro Junior ratings. His wave selection and ability to maximise each wave he caught saw him secure a combined total of 14.65 points out of a possible twenty.
“It was tough going out there, but there were a few runners that you could get a few turns on if you got them”, said Kennedy, who will look to continue his winning form in 2008 here in Western Australia when he surfers again in round two.
Another surfer who set the pace this morning was Nick Riley, (Fairlight, NSW) who locked away two solid scores in the opening half of the heat and then set about defending his lead from two WA surfers in Dave Delroy-Carr (Margaret River) and Zak Ogram (Dunsborough).
“The conditions were pretty hard, everyone was struggling out there. I think I did alright and hopefully the waves get a little cleaner for tomorrow,” said Riley who has had a great start to 2008. Delroy-Carr (Margaret River) is currently WA’s highest rated surfer in the series and will be sure to challenge on home turf when competition continues tomorrow.
“It was inconsistent out there, but I was lucky to pick off a couple worthy ones, Im just spewing I had to eliminate a close friend Zak Ogram.” Said Delroy-Carr. Other West Australians to advance to round two were Courtney Brown (Kalbarri), Matt Baldock (Margaret River), Tod Quartermaine (Mandurah), and Darcy Maynard (Karrinyup).
New South Wales Mid Coast was well represented with Heath Joske (Valla), and Jayke Sharp (Coffs Harbour) both progressing into round two. Sharp was rewarded with the day’s highest individual wave score of 8.50 out of a possible ten after stringing together four quality manoeuvres on right hand set wave.
“Conditions weren’t that great, especially after the wind swung around. I think I could have done better if I got another back up ride, but an 8.5 you can’t complain with,” commented Sharp after his heat.
The $25,000 event will continue tomorrow with good conditions forecast for the remainder of the competition. The women’s division is likely to hit the water first thing tomorrow before moving back into round two of the men’s heats. The SunSmart Pro Junior has secured some of the biggest names in Australian junior surfing, including ratings leader Stuart Kennedy (Lennox Head), Lincoln Taylor (Stradbroke Is.).
Owen Wright (Culburra) and Heath Joske (Valla) as well as 32 of the country’s hottest female surfers including teen sensation and defending champion Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa, NSW) have arrived in Perth and are keen to hit the water tomorrow.
The SunSmart Pro Junior is proudly supported by SunSmart, Healthway, The City of Stirling, ASP Australasia and Surfing Western Australia.
