Picon Keeps Going, Pires Bows Out Despite a Perfect 10

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 May, 2008 : - - Teahupoo -- Miky Picon (FRA), last of four Europeans still in the Billabong Pro Tahiti pres. by Air Tahiti Nui, got through his Round 2 match-up against Ben Dunn (AUS) last night, and will now face 2006 ASP Rookie of the Year and former Billabong Pro Tahiti champion Bobby Martinez (USA).

Picon, who posted a solid 15.07 heat tally (out of a possible 20) to defeat Dunn, avoided antoher last place finish after his 33rd at Bells Beach and hopes to better his best result ever on an ASP World Tour event if he reaches Round 4. Picon, who was among the ASP Top 45 in 2006, never reached Round 4 during his rookie season and will have a chance to advance if he defeats Martinez when competition resumes.

Picon will surf first heat when competition restarts in Tahiti, and his duel will be LIVE webcast on aspworldtour.com

Tiago Pires (PRT), who avoided Round 2 in the Billabong Pro Tahiti when he won his opening heat on Day 1 of competition to advance straight into Round 3, lost last night to top seeded surfer Joel Parkinson (AUS) despite posting a perfect 10.00 point ride (out of a possible 10). Pires, who was penalized with an interference call, missed a spot in Round 4 finishing with an average 10.00 point heat tally and places equal 17th for his best result since the beginning of the year.
