Day two of the SunSmart Pro Junior brings some sensational surfing & early upsets

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 May, 2008 : - - The second day of the SunSmart Pro Junior saw the first heats of the women’s division hit the water at Trigg Beach WA. With a slight drop in swell overnight but more favourable winds, the contestants had clean 1.0m left and right hand waves to perform in.

The first heat was dominated by local surfer Jaala Baldock, (Kallaroo, WA) who seemed in sync with the ocean from the opening siren, utilising the peeling lefts on offer to string together some powerful forehand manoeuvres. Baldock who has been WA’s best representative on this year’s Pro Junior Series looked to make the most of the home turf advantage and capitalised on her opportunities to score the heats highest wave total of 5.25 points.

“Im just glad I got a few ok ones out there, it was pretty tricky. Next round is going to be hard coming up against Sally Fitzgibbons, but Im looking forward to the challenge,” said Baldock.

Fellow West Australian Laura Macaulay, (Gracetown, WA) was another to impress with an emphatic victory over some more fancied opponents in the fourth heat of the day. The daughter of former professional surfer Dave Macaualy set about showing that surfing runs in the blood with a razor sharp backhand attack which saw her claim victory ahead of three East coast competitors in Paige Haggerston (NSW), Lori Kelly (QLD) and Courtney Bell (QLD).

Unfortunately it was a case of mixed fortunes for the other Macaulay sisters, with Ellie and Bronte both eliminated in today’s round one heats. Another WA hopeful Felicity Palmateer, (Hillarys, WA) who surfs Trigg’s beach almost everyday, was also sent packing after Tyler Wright (Culburra, NSW) who dominated her heat

Paige Hareb, (New Zealand) was the form surfer early, annihilating each and every section that came her way on route to securing the days highest combined heat total of 13.50 points. Hareb, who has enjoyed much success in WA after claiming her maiden WQS title at the Drug Aware Pro in Margaret River last month, will look to keep her success rolling when the women’s event continues tomorrow.

In the men’s division it was the top seeds that maintained their momentum from yesterday to secure their position in the round of 24. Currently ratings leader Stuart Kennedy (Lennox Head, NSW) continued his stellar form to walk away with a win ahead of Courtney Brown, (Kalbarri, WA).

Kennedy who goes about his surfing in a true business man style, locked away an 8.25 point ride in the opening five minutes and built his heat from there, scoring a 6.90 ride as his back up. Brown will also be joined in round 3 by Dave Delroy-Carr (Margaret River, WA) who also progressed through his heat this morning and will be the last West Australian’s flying the flag on WA shores.

The breeze kicked up slightly during the day making conditions a little tricky and frustrating for surfers. Those that seemed most suited to the shifty peaks and progressed through to round 3 of competition were Chris Friend (QLD), Nick Riley (NSW), Mitch Crews (QLD), Chris Enever (NSW), Dean Ieezi (QLD), Jayke Sharpe (NSW), Heath Joske (NSW), Chris Sailsbury (NSW), and Lincoln Taylor (QLD). Round 3 will start at 7.30am at Trigg Beach with event officials confident in an increase in swell size and all day offshore’s forecast.

The SunSmart Pro Junior is proudly supported by SunSmart, Healthway, The City of Stirling, ASP Australasia and Surfing Western Australia.
