Wildcoast applauds the cancellation of Bajagua project

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 May, 2008 : - - Imperial Beach, Ca -- Wildcoast applauds the decision by the International Boundary and Water Commission to cancel the Bajagua Project and to upgrade the existing sewage treatment plant in San Ysidro on the U.S.-Mexico border. The commission argued that this would improve the San Ysidro sewage plant's treatment levels, which currently fail to meet federal Clean Water Act standards. 

The beaches of the U.S.-Mexico border are among the most polluted in North America. This year alone Imperial Beach has been closed close to 50 days and over the past decade has been closed close to a total of four years from sewage discharges from Mexico.  ³This action, is a an affirmation of good government and the need to resolve the border sewage crisis in a cost effective manner.

We are happy that the voice of thousands of border residents and the border surfing community were heard over the millions of dollars spent by Bajagua on lobbying and campaign contributions,² said Serge Dedina, Executive Director of WiLDCOAST.  We are grateful to the IBWC for making this important decision and are thankful to Senator Feinstein for stepping up as a clean water champion and fighting for clean beaches and clean water on the U.S.-Mexico border.² 

In a May 15th letter to IBWC Commissioner Carlos Marin, WiLDCOAST, commended the decision as ³a critical step towards implementing the comprehensive clean water plan we need at the San Diego-Tijuana border.² "We are also thankful to our surf industry supporters especially the SIMA Environmental Fund that has helped power our grassroots movement to clean up border beaches," said Serge Dedina.
