Sunny Garcia accepts top Wildcard position for Maldives 6 Star Prime WQS.
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 May, 2008 : - - At 38 years, Sunny Garcia, the 2000 ASP World Champion has accepted one of the top ranked Wildcards for the upcoming SriLankan Airlines Pro. The popular Garcia, also a 6 time winner of the coveted Hawaiian Triple Crown of Surfing will head to the Maldives in early June to continue a comeback attempt on the ASP World Tour rankings.
Sunny returned to the 2008 ASP WQS Tour after a lengthy hiatus from competition and has attacked the ASP World Qualifying Series with a renewed vigour, now currently ranking comfortably in 10th position on the WQS ratings. Sunny has adapted his trademark power surfing on the WQS Tour in 2008 defeating numerous younger opponents in both smaller and larger surf conditions.
Now residing in California and training for the Maldives, Garcia welcomed the SriLankan Airlines Pro Wildcard opportunity, quoting today “I'd like to thank SriLankan Airlines for the opportunity to compete at Pasta Point.
I have wanted to compete there for a long time and it’s so important for me to be there to re-qualify for the WCT Dream Tour next year. A big thanks to everyone involved with the event I'm really excited to get to the Maldives and will be trying my best to capitalize on this event.
SriLankan Airlines Head of Corporate Communications, Mr Saminda Perera today welcomed the opportunity for Garcia to compete as wildcard, “As Sunny is a former ASP World Champion we are elated to have a him accepting the Wildcard, the event is the largest international sporting event held in the Maldives and it is great to see Sunny Garcia will be competing at the event.
Other key event Wildcards will go to winner of the recent 6 Star WQS in Scotland, Australia’s Adam Robertson and WQS rookie campaigner Mitch Coleborn. Robertson who is enjoying his best year on the tour will be amped to post a solid result at Pasta Point to consolidate his current WQS Tour ranking.
Speaking from his home in Victoria, Australia, Robertson commented… I’m super happy with my result in Scotland recently and this is a great opportunity to back up that result. The Maldives is an awesome event and the SriLankan Airlines Pro is probably the best WQS event on the tour offering great waves and a fantastic event location. I’m really looking forward to it and training hard to stay on my game.
Mitch Coleborn also headlines the Wildcard competitors in the Maldives. Coleborn from Australia’s Sunshine Coast blazed his way through the 2007 ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series and is highly capable of staking a solid performance in the perfect Pasta Point waves of the Maldives.
Up to 15 of the elite 2008 ASP Top 45 will contest the SriLankan Airlines Pro, including last year’s event winner, Brazilian Heitor Alves, his fellow countryman Adriano de Souza, former World No 2 Australian Mick Campbell and Portugal’s Tiago Pires. Pasta Point has produced outstanding quality surf conditions for the SriLankan Airlines Pro over the previous 2 years and ASP competitors favor the event as one of the best on the ASP WQS Tour.
