First Ever Film Collaboration Premiers Tuesday Night
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 May, 2008 : - - Newport Beach, Ca – The Surfrider Foundation’s first ever film collaboration premiers Tuesday, May 20th at the Lido Theater in Newport Beach. Created in partnership with the Teton Gravity Research, OUT THERE showcases today’s most progressive surfing, while considering humankind’s impact on the world’s oceans, beaches and waves.
Through the experiences of surfers and the locals they meet throughout their travel, the film takes a thought-provoking look into the environmental destruction threatening known and unknown surf spots. OUT THERE questions impending threats to Trestles in Southern California, pulp mill pollution in Southern Chile and unrestricted development along Hawaii’s famed North Shore.
“OUT THERE features local surfers speaking to the issues facing their backyard beaches and waves,” says TGR Co-Founder, Steve Jones. “Taking this film to coastal communities across the country will hopefully inspire more people to take action locally to protect their beaches, while raising money for Surfrider.”
Shot in hi-definition and 16 mm, the film highlights the surfing of John John Florence, Shane Dorian, Ian Walsh, Jamie Sterling, Pancho Sullivan, Jordy Smith, Jamie O’Brien, Nate Yeomans, Brett Simpson, Greg Long, Garrett McNamara, Herbie Fletcher, Torrey Meister, Sterling Spencer, Raimana Van Bastolaer, Donavan Frankenreiter, Maya Gabeira, Manoa Drollet and Carlos Burle.
“It has been an incredible experience working with Teton Gravity Research on this project,” says Surfrider Foundation’s Marketing Director, Matt McClain. “With this effort they are redefining the surf movie genre.”
Following Tuesday nights premier, OUT THERE will embark on a two month tour up and down the East and West Coasts, thanks to sponsorship from Jeep, SoBe Life Water, Surfer Magazine and Billabong.
OUT THERE will also be available on DVD later this year. Thanks to the generosity of TGR, each copy of OUT THERE comes with a free, one-year membership to the Surfrider Foundation.
