Luke Davis and Evan Geiselman light up Rip Curl Gromsearch in Huntington Beach

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 June, 2008 : - - This past weekend, the world witnessed an epic East vs. West clash. No…we’re not referring to the Lakers/Celtics NBA Finals series, but rather the culmination of two blitzing surfing talents.

Amidst record-breaking competitor attendances, the 3 rd stop of the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Boost Mobile showcased just how far the G-Search has evolved in its 9 years of existence, as Luke Davis and Evan Geiselman etched their respective names into GromSearch folklore with duel mind-blowing performances.

A flexing southern hemi served up solid head-high bashable peaks for the nation’s hottest 16/under talent to do work. With cash money prizes, trips to the Boost Mobile Pro, Invites to the National Final, and the newest in Boost Mobile cell phone technology on the line, it’s no wonder the groms took off the training wheels for this one.

Double dipping in both the Boys 14/under and Boys 16/under, Luke Davis and Evan Geiselman had plenty of chances to test one another’s prowess. Davis, a stylish young natural footer from San Juan Capistrano, lit up 9 th Street as he dismantled each and every peak en route to double finals. Geiselman, the flashy talented ‘Right Coaster’ from New Smyrna Beach, Florida resembled a budding Machado, surgically dissecting everything he rode.

First, the Boys 14/under Final: Geiselman shows no mercy. Whipping his tail around with a sort of chaotic control, “Lil’ E.G.” left no doubt in the minds of spectators who took home the early hardware. While a teeth-grittin’ Davis finished runner-up, he would have his vengeance next time around.

Once the piercing sound of the horn signified the Boys 16/under Final was on, Davis waited about 12 seconds before locking in a solid 9.0 wave score. 2 valiant outside hacks with a smooth transition to the inside racetrack, Davis found himself in the drivers seat from the start.

Despite a massive air reverse from Ian Crane and some fin wafts from Geiselman, Davis remained patient, as he later found the largest wave of the event. Tearing the roof off on his first turn, he locked in another 8+ point ride, sealing the phone, the cash, the loot, and the bragging rights.

“It was all luck,” smiled a hooded Davis during his awards speech. “Really fun event, really stoked to be here, and I’m looking forward to the National Final this November.” Despite coming up short in the money division, Geiselman was all smiles as well. “This was such a sick event. The competition was really hard, and I’m just stoked to be here.”

While the duo may have stole the show, both the 12/under Boys and 16/under Girls held their own as well. A fierce see-saw battle between Koa Smith and Ian Gentil left the 2 young Hawaiians neck and neck heading into the final seconds. Clutching up like Jordan, Gentil clawed his way into a wave in the dying seconds, stamping his Michael Ho-inspired open wing snaps all the way to the sand to narrowly defeat Smith; another future rivalry to keep an eye on.

In the Girls 16/under, Kauai representer, Nage Melamed won on sheer technique. Her open face carves, drawn out bottom turns, and smooth aura, showcased a young talent bound for the next level. The Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Boost Mobile now sets its sites on the Aloha State, as Lahaina Harbor, Maui will witness the GromSearch movement on July 12.
