Raoni Monteiro could well lead the WQS in the Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro        >  Portugues embaixo

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 June, 2008 : - - On the best waves of the week at Pitangueiras Beach, Wilson Nora found an incredible barrel to almost reach the first 10 of the Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro this Friday. He got a 9,63, the new record of that contest until Leandro Bastos scored a 9,83 in sensational wave to eliminate the proper Nora at the end of the day.

Out of 162 surfers, from 11 countries, just about 24 are still in the game for Saturday. Now Raoni is the only guy who can wipe Hizunome Bettero out of the the WQS rating´s top. To do so he has to win the contest that puts Guarujá back on track in the World Tour after 12 years.

Another 5 surfers are fighting for their name on the list of the 15 QS´s, to add up to the ASP World Championship Tour (WCT). Raoni belonged to that group until last year but slipped away. This year he could get back and even leave Brazil as a leader if he wins here as he did in Fernando de Noronha.

“I’m doing my job, step by step, the pressure is on. Let’s face tomorrow”, said Raoni who went up from the 11th place to the 5th in the WQS, right behind the South African David Weare another one who could have made it to the top ranking if, three rounds before, he hadn´t lost against his land mate Warwick Wright and the Australian Shaun Cansdell.

On the other hand Raoni Monteiro surfed against three brazilians and abused from the Pitangueiras´ rights to defeat Flavio Nakajima, Wagner Pupo e Michel Roque. “It’s hard to find a second wave.

I’ve only got one good wave per hit and I have to improve. I need two good ones to keep going. I’m keeping cool, the board is good and I’ll charge. I wanna taste victory again and hope to reach the final here. It’s still far and I have to take it easy as the rounds are getting harder. The level is high. It’s not easy”, he said with caution.

While the guy from Rio de Janeiro fights alone for the rating´s leadership other surfers are trying to get into the classifying zone to the WCT at the Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro. Two of them got in already this Friday, the Australian Shaun Gossmann and the Brazilian Pablo Paulino who made it when he got into the 48 round.

“I’m going after that place. Each hit counts”, said, he, who at the beginning of the year did as well as Joel Parkinson when he won for the second time the ASP World Pro Junior, in Australia. Even defeated by David do Carmo and Yuri Sodré, he’s still amongst the top 15.

The other five with chances to make the top 15 at the Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro are, the Brazilians Jihad Kohdr and Yuri Sodré, the South-Africans Greg Emslie and Warwick Wright and the Australian Kirk Flintoff. Emslie was a WCT last year and didn’t think he could make it to the classification in Brazil.

“I thought I could only get there in South-Africa (next week in Durban). Even better to know now, motivates me more, eventhough there will be a lot of events till the end of the year and things could change”, said Greg Emslie.

On a Friday with good 1,5 to 2 meters waves, he won his second victory at Pitangueiras getting over the Tahiti’s WCT champion, Bruno Santos, who made his way through the second place against Renato Galvão and Nathan Brandi. The Brazilians did well eventhough few important names, like the Top WCT Neco Padaratz, are out of the Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro.

NEW RECORDS – The first highlight was the fantastic barrel by Wilson Nora, the first of the contest. He broke the record with 9,63 Friday morning. “I was watching some barrels in the morning and I went for it. I waited out there and then it came. I got stoked by the record and, of course, by my making the hit”, said an euphoric Nora before being eliminated by the new record handler of the Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro.

In an incredible battle in which Adilton Mariano had made a 9,33 and Wilson Nora struggled for his classification, Leandro Bastos dropped a great left and smashed the lip three times with his backside attack to tear a 9,83 from the judges, the highest score of the week on the good waves of Pitangueiras.

“Adilton already had a high score and I was worried about Nora who could always score higher and then that wave came up and I took the risk. It was amazing”, excited.

Raoni Monteiro pode liderar WQS no Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 June, 2008 : - - No melhor dia de ondas da semana na Praia das Pitangueiras, o baiano Wilson Nora achou um tubão incrível para quase arrancar o primeiro 10 do Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro na sexta-feira.

Ele não saiu, mas a nota 9,63 recebida era o novo recorde do campeonato, até o carioca Leandro Bastos arrancar um 9,83 numa onda sensacional para eliminar o próprio Nora mais no final do dia. Do total de 162 participantes de 11 países, apenas 24 classificaram-se para o sábado.

O carioca Raoni Monteiro agora é o único que pode tirar o paulista Hizunomê Bettero da ponta do ranking WQS, mas para isso ele tem que vencer o campeonato que marca a volta do Guarujá ao Circuito Mundial depois de 12 anos. Outros cinco surfistas estão na briga para ingressar na lista dos 15 do WQS que vão completar a elite do ASP World Championship Tour (WCT).

Raoni Monteiro fazia parte desse grupo até o ano passado e acabou saindo, mas pode recuperar sua vaga já nesse ano e até sair líder do Brasil se repetir o título conquistado em Fernando de Noronha (PE) no Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro.

“Meu trabalho está sendo feito, estou indo devagarzinho, o funil tá apertando e vamos aí partir para amanhã”, disse Raoni, que já pulou da 11.a para a quinta posição no WQS. Está logo abaixo do sul-africano David Weare, outro único que tinha chance de assumir a ponta do ranking se, três baterias antes, não tivesse perdido para o seu compatriota Warwick Wright e o australiano Shaun Cansdell.

Já Raoni Monteiro enfrentou três brasileiros e usou bem as direitas da Praia das Pitangueiras para derrotar os paulistas Flávio Nakagima e Wagner Pupo e o cearense Michel Roque. “Está difícil de achar uma segunda onda. Tenho surfado só uma onda boa por bateria e vou ter que melhorar. Preciso pegar duas boas para continuar avançando. Mas, estou conseguindo manter a calma, a prancha está boa e vamos com tudo. Quero sentir aquele gostinho da vitória de novo e espero fazer uma final aqui, mas está longe ainda, tem que ir devagar porque as baterias estão cada vez mais difíceis, o nível é alto, não é fácil”, disse, com cautela.

Enquanto o carioca agora briga sozinho pela liderança do ranking, outros surfistas tentam entrar na zona de classificação para o WCT no Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro. Dois já atingiram o feito na sexta-feira, o australiano Shaun Gossmann e o brasileiro Pablo Paulino, que passou a figurar entre os 15 quando passou para a fase dos 48 melhores.

“Estou correndo atrás dessa vaga e cada bateria para mim é super importante para somar pontos”, falou o cearense, que no início do ano igualou um feito que era único de Joel Parkinson, ao conquistar o bicampeonato no Mundial Pro Junior da ASP na Austrália. Ele continua na lista dos 15, mas acabou eliminado no último confronto do dia pelo paulista David do Carmo e o carioca Yuri Sodré.

VAGAS PARA O WCT - Os outros cinco que ainda podem conseguir um lugar entre os 15 do WQS no Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro são os brasileiros Jihad Kohdr e Yuri Sodré, os sul-africanos Greg Emslie e Warwick Wright e o australiano Kirk Flintoff. Emslie era do WCT no ano passado e não achava que poderia chegar na zona de classificação no Brasil.

“Pensei que só poderia conseguir isso depois da etapa da África do Sul (semana que vem em Durban). Muito bom saber disso, me motiva mais ainda, apesar de saber que tem muitos campeonatos pela frente até o final do ano e muita coisa pode mudar”, falou Greg Emslie.

Na sexta-feira de boas ondas de 1,5 a 2,0 metros de altura, ele conquistou sua segunda vitória na Praia das Pitangueiras, superando inclusive o campeão do WCT do Tahiti nos tubos de Teahupoo, o niteroiense Bruno Santos.

Mas, Bruninho ganhou a briga pela segunda vaga dos paulistas Renato Galvão e Nathan Brandi. Apesar de algumas baixas importantes, como a do top do WCT Neco Padaratz, os brasileiros foram o destaque do dia mais uma vez no Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro.

NOVOS RECORDES - O primeiro grande momento foi apresentado pelo baiano Wilson Nora, que surfou um tubo fantástico, o primeiro do campeonato, para registrar a primeira quebra de recorde na sexta-feira com a nota 9,63 que recebeu dos juízes.

“Eu já tinha visto rolar alguns tubos pela manhã e acreditei que ia vir, fiquei lá esperando e ele veio, aí foi só felicidade por ter passado a bateria e por ter feito o recorde do campeonato”, vibrou Nora, que depois acabou eliminado pelo novo recordista de nota do Local Motion Guarujá Surf Pro.

Numa disputa incrível em que o cearense Adilton Mariano já havia conseguido um 9,33 e Wilson Nora brigava pela classificação, o carioca Leandro Bastos pegou uma ótima esquerda e acertou três manobras muito fortes de backside (de costas para a onda) para arrancar uma nota 9,83, a maior de toda a semana nas boas ondas da Praia das Pitangueiras.

“O Adilton já tinha um high-score e eu estava preocupado com o Nora que podia tirar um notão também, mas aí entrou essa onda e eu arrisquei tudo, foi alucinante”, vibrou.
