Largest All Military Surf Classic ever goes off at Barber’s Point, HI

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 July, 2008 : - - The annual All Military Surf Classic, Presented by HIC, Quiksilver and MWR once again brought Active US Military personnel, retirees, dependants and their families together for a day of surf, sun, competition and camaraderie on the sands of White Plains Beach.

Located on Oahu’s South West corner, White Plains delivered up fun, knee to shoulder high surf for the largest group of contestants ever to compete in the history of the event.  180 contestants, including 97 Active Duty, battled it out for trophies, prizes and bragging rights in 16 divisions, including Open and Active Duty categories for shortboard and longboard surfing.

This year’s event also included a “Top Branch” award which was proudly claimed by the US Navy, by taking first place in three of the five Active Duty divisions.  Notable performances included Shawn Clamlee’s domination of the Active Duty category by taking gold in both the Shortboard and Longboard divisions for Military 17 to 29 years old .

Fabian Enamoria also proved strong by taking  irst in Military Longboard 30 & over, and third place in Military Shortboard 30 & over. Rod Behrend ripped his way to a First place finish in Military Shortboard 30 & over, and Dee Marques outclassed the other Military Women by taking First in the Military Women’s Longboard.

Kawehi Whitford was the big winner in the Open category by taking first place in both the Open Women’s Shortboard and Longboard divisions. Ellijah Gates showed huge potential by surfing well above his years taking First in the Open Shortboard 12 & under, just ahead of girls Tiare Blanco and Nicole Brueggemann, who faired well at 2nd and 3rd place against the mostly male field.

Other Open Shortboard First place winners were E.J. Mitsui (13 to 17 year olds), Pat Buckley (18 to 29 year olds), and Nike Estencion (30 & over).  The Open Longboard First Place male finishers were Marciano Whitford (age 17 & under), Matt Martinez (age 18 to 29), Buster Kellum (age 30 to 39),  Johnnie Dodge (age 40 & over), and Herb Prause taking out the other Longboard Masters (50 & over).

The All Military Surf Classic is made possible by the support of Navy Hawaii MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) whose mission it is to improve the lives of US Military Personnel and their families. The sponsors, Hawaiian Island Creations and Quiksilver, are proud to support the men and women of the US Armed Forces who proudly serve our country,  Stay safe, keep surfing and enjoy the ride…
