Quarter finalists decided at Quiksilver Open Lakeys presented by the Coca-Cola ISC Tour

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 July, 2008 : - - Quarter finalists have been decided at the Quiksilver Open Lakeys presented by the Coca-Cola ISC Tour following another day of great waves and fierce competition which saw rounds three and four completed. Wave selection, paddling stamina and timing were the ticket to winning heats in the solid over-head conditions. A few unlucky competitors were caught inside on the shallow reef by six-foot plus sets.

2007 ISC champion Lee Wilson was a clear standout on day three, winning two heats to ensure his place in the quarter finals. In the glassy early-morning conditions the stylish natural footer dominated from start to finish. But Wilson’s best wave came late in the day, an excellent 8.5 out of a possible 10 to see him advance comfortably into the final 16 and forcing the elimination of Mustofa Jekson.

Wayan ‘Kopling’ Wirtama continued his charge, also winning two heats. Wirtama was smashing lips, gouging re-entries and just generally serving it up to Lakey’s. His path of destruction included the elimination of Mohamad Yunus. Wayan will next face off against Wilson in quarter-final number one.

The highest scoring wave of the day belonged to Wayan ‘Gobleg’ Suyadyna. Gobleg was blasting into each wave his powerful forehand, throwing buckets of spray and surfing like a mad man. He comboed the unlucky Ribut Wahyudi with an exceptional 9.0 ride.

Gobleg has drawn Quiksilver rider Wayan ‘Betet’ Mertha, who today accounted for defending event champion Pepen Hendrik in a closely contested battle. With both surfers in such great form, the Gobleg/Betet quarter-final stoush is anticipated to be one of the hottest of the round.

Quarter Final number three will see Made ‘Bol’ Adi Putra surf off versus Made ‘Garut’ Widiarta.  Bol’s performance this afternoon included an awesome 8.5 ride, courtesy of a massive single move, which put his opponent, Tipi Jabrik, on the ropes and needing a 7.8 to take the win. Tipi put it all on the line on his last ditch ride, pulling into a big right barrel that unfortunately shut down, and with it his hopes of advancing.

While Garut earned his quarter-final berth by surviving a see-sawing battle for the lead in his round four heat versus Komang ‘Gogo’ Sujaya. The fourth quarter-final will see Devis Ratif surf against a ripping Dedi Santoso.

Santoso today forced the elimination of the last remaining Sumbawa local in the competition, Sammy Samsudin. It was a top effort by Sammy to get so far and survive the late afternoon low-tide conditions which at times, saw the waves draining off the edge of the Lakey’s reef.  Conditions are expected to be similar for tomorrow’s final day where the 2008 Quiksilver Open Lakeys 2008 presented by the Coca-Cola ISC Tour will be crowned.

The final day will also see the completion of the Women’s and Master’s divisions.
