Made ‘Garut’ Widiarta Victorious at Quiksilver Open Lakeys Presented By The Coca-Cola ISC Tour

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 July, 2008 : - -  Made ‘Garut’ Widiarta (Kuta-Bal) was in his element today in the 3-4 foot semi-glassy lefthand walls of Lakey Peak, pulling out all the stops and besting his hard-charging opponant Wayan ‘Gobleg’ Suyadnya (Uluwatu-Bali) to come away with his first ISC win in almost two years.

After letting Gobleg start out in front with the first wave of the Final, getting on the scoreboard with a 6.0, Garut fell on his first wave attempting an aggressive turn off the top. But while Gobleg waited patiently on the outside for a set wave, Garut spotted a perfect 3 footer and let loose a combination of deep bottom turns and a battering lip attack to post an whopping 8.5.

He went on to score a 6.83 on his next wave while Gobleg, chasing a 9.34 point deficit, got into a fat set wave with which he did well to score a 7.6. That still left Gobleg needing a 7.74 with 10 minutes to go, and with a good set wave refusing to appear, a 5 and a 4.17 were all he could come up with before time ran out.

When the horn blew, an elated Garut raised his arms high into the air with a huge smile on his face. The Zodiac quickly motored over to pick him up and bring him to the tower, where he said to the media and crew, “I’m so stoked to finally win a contest again. I’ve been training a lot but seems like I haven’t done so well in comps lately. I’m so happy to finally win!?”

With his win he’ll be going home with a fat wallet containing Rp 20 Million (about USD $2,000) and 3,500 ISC Championship points, in addition to pushing his ISC ranking up to 3rd place for the 2008 ISC Tour season.

Gobleg, though naturally disappointed not to have won, was never the less very satisfied with his runner up finish. “This is the first time I’ve made it to the final in a big contest like this, so I’m really happy with the result,” he said with a grin as he went over to give Garut a handshake and a high five. Gobleg had been unstoppable in his run for the Final, posting the events only other 9 point score yesterday in Round Four.

The start of Quarterfinal One at 7:30 saw glassy 4 foot waves hitting the reef in classic A-frame Lakey Peak fashion. Lee Wilson jumped ahead of Wayan ‘Kopling’ Wirtama early and then furthered his lead with a nice right hand barrel that scored an 8.33. Kopling answered back with a 7.43, but what he needed was a 7.74, and time ran out on him before he got another chance.

In Quarterfinal Two things were very quiet in the early going, then Gobleg went into action and posted a couple of 7 pointers that left Wayan ‘Betet’ Merta playing catch up. Time ran out on Betet before any waves arrived to help him stage a comeback.

In a surprising upset, Garut took down Made ‘Bol’ Adi Putra in the last half of Quarterfinal Three. Bol had blasted into the lead, posting a 7.5, and looked to be running away with the heat. But Garut picked up momentum as the heat progressed and ripped off first a 7.17 and then an 8.5 to take over the lead. With a minute to go, Bol had his chance but fell on a potentially high scoring wave to exit the heat and the event.

Then in Quarterfinal Four, Devis Ratif demonstrated his powerful and consistent backside attack on some of the bigger set waves to eliminate Dedy Santoso and advance to the semifinals.

In Semifinal One, Gobleg ended Lee Wilson’s run for his first ISC final of 2008. Lee was looking for some magic on the righthander again but it failed to come around for him, while Gobleg waited for his turn and ripped apart a couple to combo Lee, adding to it with a big 8 pointer as insurance near the end of the heat.

Semifinal Two finished with Devis just shaking his head. While he sat outside and waited for the sets, the on-fire Garut took one on the inside and blasted a 9.33 to start the action, then got another quick 6 pointer to combo Devis before he even got a wave. 13 minutes into the heat Devis finally got his first wave, a 6.5. He added a 7.17 but that still left him needing a 9+ to beat the unstoppable Garut, and time ran out.

Congratulations to Garut for a well deserved and hard won victory.

Roxy Open Women’s Division Action

Six women surfers from Bali made the trip to Sumbawa to compete in the Roxy Open Lakeys presented by the Coca-Cola ISC Tour, so two 3-women heats and a final were held today at Lakey Peak.

Bonne, Desy, Debby, Fesi, Satri, and Stella scrambled down from the tower and paddled out to challenge the solid 3-4 foot waves. The bigger set waves and currents gave them a workout, but they bravely took on the waves as they came, taking some spills but all surviving with style and with big smiles on their faces

Bonne, originally from Nias, racked up some impressive scores on her forehand, winning the final convincingly. Satri from Kuta was on her backside giving Bonne a serious challenge, but ended the heat in second, needed a 6+ result to win. Fesi followed in third spot, while Desi ended in fourth. Good job girls, especially in these tough reef break conditions!

Masters Division Action

Also held today was the Masters Division, with two competitors from Bali, Ketut Menda (Kuta) and Wayan ‘Gachang’ Wisma (Sanur) and two local Masters Moh Ali and Jimmy Hamsah.

The waves were still pumping and giving these over 35 year old Masters a great opportunity to surf the great waves of the famed Lakey Peak with just 3 other guys in the water. Gachang from Sanur wasted no time in picking off a right-hander to jump into the lead after Ketut Menda fell on his first wave.

But soon Menda got his rhythm going and went to work to chase Gachang, posting a big 7.0 to close the gap Moh Ali and Jimi Hamsah both had a bit of trouble getting into scoring positions, so it was mostly the Menda-Gachang show. At the 10-minute mark, Menda slotted into a nice right hand barrel that got him a 9.0 from the judges and the lead. In the final minutes Gachang staged a comeback by trying to get into a barrel of his own, but it just didn’t open up for him and when the horn blew it was second place for him.
