Patrick Gudauskas back on top of WQS ratings after Mr Price Pro

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 July, 2008 : - - Huntington Beach -- The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) hit the halfway mark of the season at this week’s ASP WQS 6-Star event, the Mr. Price Pro, held in Durban, South Africa. This venue played an integral role for a number of ASP North American ASP WQS competitors, as top North American seeds took advantage of the valuable points on offer.

ASP WQS North American surfers Patrick Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA), Nathaniel Curran (Oxnard, CA) and Nathan Yeomans (San Clemente, CA) all posted impressive results by cracking the Round of 16 at this event against the some of the globe’s finest competitors.

Gudauskas, who went to South Africa rated No. 2 on the ASP WQS, put in a massive effort in Durban’s rippable beachbreaks, finish equal 3rd and reclaiming the No. 1 spot on the ASP WQS ratings. “I’ve never done well in Durban so to get a third today is a great result for me,” Gudauskas said. “I’m really excited to be back at No. 1, it’s a very long season so I just want to continue bettering my results.”

Gudauskas’ Semifinals berth did not come easily however, as he bested ASP World Tour No. 13 Jeremy Flores (Reunion Island, FRA) in the Quarterfinals. Gudauskas is now the top seed leading the charge towards qualification of the 2009 ASP World Tour.

The standout natural-footer has recuperated from a disappointing performance in the two Brazilian events, and is back on course heading into the upcoming ASP WQS 6-Star GO211 LIVE featuring the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach from July 18-27, 2008

Curran’s consistency over the past three events has put him in an excellent position on the ASP WQS. His 16th place finish at the Mr. Price Pro helps move him further up the ASP WQS ratings lead toward qualification for the 2009 Dream Tour.

The young Californian has put together three solid results beginning with the back-to-back ASP 5-star events held in Brazil over the past few weeks, launching him well within the Top 10 on the ASP WQS. This solid result at the Mr. Price Pro only improved on his already impressive rating by launching him up another two notches into 4th place on the ASP WQS ratings.

Yeomans, who was rated No. 15 on the ASP WQS going into the Mr. Price Pro looked to climb back in within the Top 10 with a solid result in Durban. Yeomans’ Quarterfinals finish at this South African event earned him the valuable ratings points he was looking for, making the long trek to South Africa well worth his wile.

This solid result bumped Yeomans up six spots on the ratings chart, putting him in 9th place overall on his quest towards qualification for the 2009 ASP World Tour.

With the ASP WQS hitting the halfway point in the season, these top ASP North American seeds will look to stay consistent throughout the second half of the year. Other ASP North American surfers Austin Ware (Solana Beach, CA), Brett Simpson (Huntington Beach, CA) and Shaun Ward (Huntington Beach, CA) are also in excellent contention for qualification for the 2009 ASP World Tour as well.

These West Coast ASP WQS standouts will look to better their ratings, and work on locking in their spot on next years Dream Tour with the biggest North American event of the year, the ASP WQS 6-Star G0211 LIVE featuring the Honda U.S. Open presented by O’Neill, which will be running from July 18-27, 2008 at south Huntington Beach pier.

The nation’s only ASP WQS 6-Star event will see regional ASP World Tour surfers Chris Ward (San Clemente, CA) and Taylor Knox (Carlsbad, CA) join our top ASP North America WQS campaigners in Huntington Beach as they battle an international field of top talent.
