Pichilemu Chile World Cup Tow-In Champs at highest alert level

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 July, 2008 : - - With the holding period coming to a close on July 15th, it looks as though Mother Nature wants to play hard at the very last minute! By now everyone should be aware of the two storm systems that we are monitoring. Storm system number one will hit on Sat/Sun with a straight westerly direction and unwelcoming  NNW winds 27-36knots.

This swell will produce buoy heights of 16'-19' @10 seconds. On Monday this system will drop to, 10'-13' @13 seconds. This system is not looking ideal for our event because of poor wind forecast and low interval. Ideally, we are looking for interval periods to be above 14 seconds.

We are also keeping an eye on a second storm system that is the most impressive development we have seen all season for this region. Here is how it is breaking down as of this morning. This is a giant one developing on 7/11-7/14.  Seas greater than 45' starting Friday night and up to 53' late  Saturday and into early Sunday!   As I said, most impressive system we have seen yet this season!

But that's all based purely on the models. It isn't real till it happens and we all know well how things can change just like that!  If it holds true, 45'+ seas should produce a 25 second long period and a very very powerful deep ocean swell.  This system should begin hitting Central Chile by 5 AM Tues AM (7/15) and building there into Wednesday AM (7/16) with solid 20 sec. energy after that, then slowly dropping down. Wednesday afternoon the 16th should be the call for peak energy with potential face heights of 40'-50'.

This would be golden for our event and this is what we have all been waiting for! The other thing that we’ll really have to watch out for is the wind/weather during this swell. While it’s still quite a ways out, it appears that the storm that will set up this swell could move onshore in the area right around the same time the swell does, possibly setting up north to northwest flow. In reality, we should be able to make a solid call by Late Friday into Early Saturday.

Should all dreams come true and Mother Nature is ready to play, here is what the event schedule would look like. Note: This schedule is subject to change, give or take by one day.

Sunday-Tuesday July 13-15th, all competitors arrive in Pichilemu, Chile, (Punta de Lobos)
Tuesday Night July 15, - Competitors Meeting at 'Duna Mar' Hotel
Wednesday July 16, - Tow-In Event
Thursday July 17, - Surfing Event
Friday July 18, - Expression Session and Awards Party

If there are any major changes, we will post and send out another update on Wednesday the 8th. When we call the green light, all competitors and media outlets must contact Claudia Arnold for, Chile Hotel and Ground Transportation Reservations Claudia Arnold Contact: clauarnold@yahoo.com
