Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 July, 2008 : - - Following a recent, highly positive general meeting attended by lots of keen female surfers, the brand new Cornwall Surfer Girls club is up and running and on a mission to grow and develop its vision and membership.
Female surfers across the county are being invited to join and as a great introduction the new Cornwall Surfer Girls committee will be holding a surf n’ BBQ on Friday 18th July at Perranporth from 7pm. Female surfers, no matter their age, surfing ability or location in the UK are being urged to come along, have a surf and some fun and get involved in the exciting new club initiative.
At the club’s recent first general meeting, a team of enthusiastic females were elected onto the new Cornwall Surfer Girls committee. Co-founder Tamsin Godfrey was elected as Chair and Kat Dawes, Assistant Editor of SurfGirl Magazine, is the club’s Secretary and Treasurer.
The club also has representative members which include British Junior Team member Tassy Swallow and keen photographer and surf instructor Krisha Sowinski as the Club PR officer. Elsie Pinniger, who has recently launched a range of ladies wetsuits under the Neon label, was elected as the Club Development Officer. And the girls have already been hard at work! Cornwall Surfer Girls has already set up some great opportunities for members including the social BBQ and surf night, competitions, discount to festivals and a discount on equipment rental and lessons thanks to Freeride Surf School in Perranporth. For the coming season, the club will also be looking to provide coaching to members; with a range of level I and II coaches already on the committee, they hope to offer coaching on all aspects of surfing.
As a result local surfer girl members will now be receiving regular advice on duck diving, cutbacks, general surf skills and also benefiting from video analysis. The club has also joined forces with Salt Air Adventures who will be running regular training sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday evening.
The club has set up a website and a Facebook group, which has 89 members and is growing steadily. CSG are seeking sponsorship and already have support from the BSA, SurfGIrl Magazine, Freeride Surf School and Surfstock.
Tamsin Godfrey says, “Cornwall is the home of British surfing and girl surfers are becoming more and more recognised within the sport as we have so much to offer. Surf clubs are important to the local community so that people can participate, develop and have fun. Cornwall Surfer Girls will be a member of the National Governing Body for surfing, the BSA, so all members, coaches and individuals and all activities will be covered by BSA insurance.”
Kat Dawes said, “Cornwall Surfer Girls is for all girls who surf in Cornwall, be they visitors or locals. We hope that it will recreate the surfing spirit and provide a focal point for people to meet, socialise and develop their surfing skills.
We are keen for members to take advantage of all the club has to offer! So if you want to join or know people who do, please attend the social meeting. We’re really keen to see all girl surfers, no matter what age or level of surfing, and there’s a really exciting future ahead for us all. It’s £15 to join (£10 for juniors), but just come along and see what we have to offer first!”
The meeting takes place Friday 18th July from 7pm; meet at the Freeride Surf School premises by the Seiners Arms. Local campsites include Tollgate Farm and the Haven holiday park, for those who want to fully enjoy the evening!
