Top seeds destroy all before them at The Fantastic Cup Pro Junior

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 July, 2008 : - - Victor Harbor, SA –: It was the top seeds who came, saw and conquered on day two of The Fantastic Cup Pro Junior presented by Nippy’s. In near perfect, rugged 1-1.5m conditions at Waitpinga, on the South Australian south coast, competitors revelled in all that the punchy beach-break through at them.

Attracting the best junior surfers in Australasia, The Fantastic Cup Pro Junior presented by Nippy’s saw some dynamic surfing with the action sure to heat up as the competition heads towards the business end of the event.

Spearheaded by the exceptional surfing of current under 18 girls World Champion, Laura Enever (North Narrabeen, NSW), The Fantastic Cup Pro Junior presented by Nippy’s flew into the second rounds of the boys and girls divisions. “The conditions were tough out there today, it’s quite rippy and you use a lot of energy paddling around,” she said after posting the highest heat total of the event thus far, with a 18.25 (out of a possible 20).

“I surfed down here for the National Junior Titles last year, so I’m no stranger to surfing in South Australia,” Enever added. “Hopefully it will be some advantage to me.” Having recently returned from the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in France, where she and the Australian team heralded their dominance over the other competing nations, Enever has been gearing up for an all out assault on the remainder of 2008.

“I’ve just been surfing heaps, training and cruising around home since I got back from France,” she said. “I’m really focussed right now on doing as well as possible in every event I’m competing in.” “I’m flying out to the US after this event to take part in the WQS (World Qualifying Series) event at Huntington Beach, so I’m using this event as springboard to good results overseas,” she admitted.

In the boys division it was number one seed and current ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series ratings leader, Stuart Kennedy (Lennox Head, NSW) who raised the standard of surfing in his round two heat – highlighted by a mind-blowing nine point ride.

Fellow wonder kid Owen Wright (Culburra Beach, NSW) also made a claim for The Fantastic Cup Pro Junior presented by Nippy’s title after blowing away spectators and judges alike with his dynamic and innovative approach.

Being the first ASP rated event held in South Australia for over ten years, the Fantastic Cup Pro Junior Presented by Nippy’s sees eighty of Australasia’s finest junior surfers battling it out for AUD $14,000 and crucial ratings points.

One competitor looking to continue his assault on must-have ratings points is Richard Christie (NZL) who dazzled on his backhand in the first heat of the morning. Currently ranked within the top ten of the ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series, Christie is hoping to consolidate his position with a strong performance in South Australia.

“I’ve been a little bit inconsistent this year, but a good result here will hopefully keep me in the top ten – that’s my goal,” Christie said. “The waves are pretty fun down here, so it’s a bonus for me to get down here and surf somewhere new.” Hailing from Gisborne, on the north island of New Zealand, Christie is no stranger to cold conditions and looked at home in the balmy South Australian waters this morning.

“It’s cold, but not as cold as home,” he said wryly. “Hopefully that will be an advantage for me.”

Tomorrow will see the girls 4-star Fantastic Cup Pro Junior presented by Nippy’s and the 5-star boys event roll into the quarter finals, with two new champions being crowned over the weekend.
