Small surf at Victoria Bay on Day One of the 2008 Reef Wetsuits South African Surfing Champs
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 July, 2008 : - - The 2008 Reef Wetsuits South African Surfing Championships got under way at Victoria Bay today (Thursday) with competitors in the early rounds of the Men's and Under 20 Girls Divisions putting on some outstanding performances despite having to deal with close-to-the-rocks conditions in the 2 foot surf.
With cold fronts and big swells marching up the coast from the Cape Peninsula, the surf at Victoria Bay is expected to triple in size over the next three days and the small conditions of the opening day will soon be a thing of the past.
The best performer in the first round of the Men's group was Orrin Johnson of Border who not only posted the highest wave score, a solid 9.35, but also put together the best heat score of the day while defending U20 Girls champion Chantelle Rautenbach of Boland make her intentions clear with a 9 point ride in the first heat of round one in this division.
Other heat winners in the Men's Division were Johnson's brother Tyrrell, defending SA Champion Devyn Mattheys, two time SA champion Wayne Monk (all of Border), Gary van Wieringen, Andrew Lange, Devyn MacNicol and Craig Butcher (all of Southern KZN), WP surfers Josh Salie, Aran Moore, Dagan Gold and Neil Zietsman, KZN's Matt Kruger, Shaun Payne and Simon Fish of EP and Johan Kriek, a late replacement in the Southern Cape team after Sean Holmes had to withdraw so that he could take his place in the Red Bull BWA event in Cape Town.
Bianca Buitendag of Southern Cape dominated her round one heat to join fellow heat winners Alice Mc Gregor (Border) and Danielle Le Roux (KZN) and Rautenbach in Round three. Day two of the 43rd South African Surfing Championships is expected to take place in bigger and better waves on Friday (July 25) and the finals of the Men's, Women's U20 Boys and U20 Girls Divisions will be held on Sunday July 27.
