Victoria Bay comes good on Day Two of the 2008 Reef Wetsuits South African Surfing Championships
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 July, 2008 : - - There were smiles all round as Victoria Bay lived up to its reputation, producing good 4 foot surf and clear skies on Day Two of the 2008 Reef Wetsuits SA Surfing Championships. Memories of the small, marginal surf that greeted contestants on Day One of the event were forgotten as surfers in the Men's Third Round, Under 20 Boys and Women enjoyed some typical Victoria Bay surf.
With a big swell predicted to move into the Southern Cape soon, event officials made good use of the highly contestable conditions and the last heat only left the water at around 5.40pm. Best surfer on the day was local star Shaun Joubert whose heat total of 17.50 in the Under 20 Boys Round One included a 9 point ride and is the highest heat score of the contest so far.
Ewald Van Heerden of WP and Matthew Kruger of KZN both posted a 16 point heat score in the Round Three Men's heat and Nick Godfrey of EP also scored an 8.75 ride in his round One Under 20 heat score of 14.75. Top Women's score went the way of Stacy Guy of WP whose 14.25 heat score included an 8.50 ride.
Joining Kruger and van Heerden as Heat winners in Round Three Men's were defending SA Champion Devyn Mattheys and his Border teammates Orrin and Tyrell Johnson and Travis Naude, Southern Cape charger Llewellyn Whitaker, Simon Fish, Shannon Ainslie and Ryan Payne of EP as well as Southern KZN surfers Gary van Wieringen and Devan Mac Nicol.
