Europeans In Good Form at ASP WQS 6-Star US Open of Surfing
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 July, 2008 : - - The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) European contingent is currently competing at Huntington Beach in the United States, and things have been going well so far.
Tim Boal (FRA, pictured), currently rated No. 41 on the ASP WQS international ratings, was one of the top competitors in Round 3 at Huntington's world famous beach and showed he was in good form after several disappointing results. Boal, who opened his 2008 campaign with an excellent equal 5th in the ASP WQS 5-Star Prime Hang Loose Pro in Brazil, has been chasing another solid result to keep his ASP Top 45 qualification hopes alive.
Hugo Savalli (REU), current ASP European WQS ratings leader and most consistent European surfer of the past couple of months at main ASP WQS events, will be another one of 11 Europeans to paddle out in Round 4. Savalli, who got his best result to date at the ASP WQS 6-Star Prime O'Neill Highland Open last April in Scotland, has been on a good roll since then and has not been eliminated in Round 1 of a major event since February.
Completing the Men's contingent will be experienced and solid Spanish campaigners Eneko Acero (EUK), Gony Zubuzarreta (ESP), Hodei Collazo (EUK) y Pablo Gutierrez (ESP), and leading French surfers Patrick Beven (FRA), Joan Duru (FRA), Charles Martin (GLP), Michel Bourez (PYF) with Marlon Lipke (DEU) filling the last spot.
Apart from the men's event, 2007 reigning ASP European Women's champion Lee-Anne Curren (FRA) is the last European and French representative in contention for the prestigious US Open of Surfing crown, one of the most coveted titles on Earth. Curren, who will now face current ASP Women's World Tour leader and former ASP Women's World Champion Sofia Mulanovich (PER), is on her first year on "the Grind" and aims at an ASP Top 17 qualification soon.
