Barrels and big scores highlight day one of the Quiksilver State Titles

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 July, 2008 : - - Tuncurry, NSW -- The Quiksilver State Titles opened in style today, heralded by perfect conditions and outstanding performances. As the best junior surfers in the state converged on Tuncurry’s Nine Mile Beach, led by the under 16 boys division, the action was dynamic.

Reigning under 14 boys state champion Matt Banting (Port Macquarie, NSW) was in awesome form, destroying all that the punchy, mid-north coast beach-break threw at him. “It was really fun out there with some nice little peaks” Banting said after racking up a combined heat total of 13.25 (out of a possible 20).

Coming off a host of victories in high standard junior events throughout 2008, Banting has emerged as one of the best juniors in the nation and is looking to continue his reign at the Quiksilver State Titles. “I’ve had a really good year so far, but I really want to go well in this event and get to the Australian Titles,” he said.

“Surfing against the best in the state makes it tough....It’s definitely a goal of mine to make the Australian team to compete at the (Quiksilver ISA) World Titles, but I need a good result here”, Banting added.

Also in-form was Jake Sylvester (Bar Beach, NSW). Sylvester, who finished 11th at the recent Quiksilver ISA World Junior Titles, took apart the 1m, a-frame peaks with ease en-route to the second round. For Sylvester this event is the most important on his calendar. “This is without doubt the most important event for me,” he stated. “There are so many great surfers, good waves and the opportunity to go to represent NSW.”

“Hopefully I can do well here and get back over to the World’s.” The five-day event sees 200 junior surfers battling it out, across six divisions, for prestigious State Titles and selection into the team that will represent NSW at the Australian Junior Titles scheduled for Margaret River in December.

Littered with current and former World and Australian Junior Champions, as well as top-rated ASP Australasian pro juniors, this year’s event illustrates the abundance of world-class talent within NSW. With the scheduled completion of Round 1 of the blue ribbon event, the under 18 boys, on the cards for tomorrow the scintillating action is sure to continue.

The Quiksilver State Titles will run through to 3 August 2008 and with excellent swell forecasted throughout the week, this year’s event will be one not to be missed. For more information, results and updates regarding The Quiksilver State Titles 2008 please visit www.surfingnsw.com.au.
