Wright and Coffey take prestigious state titles in style

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 August, 2008 : - - Boomerang Beach, NSW – As the perfect 1m conditions graced Boomerang Beach, four new state champions were crowned at the prestigious Quiksilver State Junior Titles.

With the best junior surfers batted it out for sought after state titles, and selection into the team that will represent NSW at the Australian Junior Titles scheduled for Margaret River in December, the action was awesome. Headlined by the exceptional performance of Kirby Wright (Culburra, NSW) in the blue-ribbon under 18 girls division, the standard of surfing was through the roof.

Wright, who’s sister Tyler and brother Michael finished runners-up in the under 16 girls and 14 boys divisions respectively, went one better to take the state title over Phillipa Anderson (Merewether, NSW), Paige Haggerston (Coal Point, NSW) and Rachel Pinsak (Terrigal, NSW). “I’m so unbelievably stoked,” Wright said. “I was just happy to make the final with the likes of Phillipa, Rachel and Paige,” she admitted. “But to win is amazing.”

Accruing a total heat score of 14.35 (out of a possible 20) in the final, Wright demonstrated her unrivalled ability in the perfect right-hander’s. “The conditions were amazing all week,” Wright added. “Bring on the Aussies.”

In the under 16 girls division it was Ellie Jean Coffey (Crescent Head, NSW) who outshone the stellar cast of competitors. “I can’t explain how happy I am right,” Coffey said, beaming after her victory. Surfing with conviction and flair, Coffey finished on top of defending champion Tyler Wright (Culburra, NSW), Emily Clapoudis (Port Macquarie, NSW) and Rachel Campbell (Stanwell Park, NSW) who finished second, third and fourth respectively.

“I never ever expected to win, but to win this competition is definitely the best result of my career to date,” she added. Racking up an impressive heat total of 13.60 (out of a possible 20) in the final, Coffey was outstanding – highlighted by a 8.75 (out of a possible 10) point-ride. “The standard of surfing in the girls division’s is so awesome, all the girls rip,” she stated. “This win gives me so much confidence - I can’t wait for the Australian titles.”

In the under 14 boys division it was event standout Soli Bailey (Byron Bay, NSW) who took the prestigious state title. Displaying a array of skills beyond his years, Bailey took the crown over Michael Wright (Culburra, NSW), Tommy Boucaut (Ocean Shores, NSW) and Jackson Baker (Merewether, NSW).

Taking out the under 14 girls division was Indianna Greene (The Entrance, NSW) with a combined heat score of 8.00 (out of a possible 20). Greene who was a reserve for the under 14 girls division certainly made the most of her call-up, defeating Coco Beeby (Scotts Head, NSW), Stephanie Single (Lennox Head, NSW) and Veronica Charles (Woolaware, NSW) in a tightly contested affair.

Littered with current and former World and Australian Junior Champions, as well as top-rated ASP Australasian pro juniors, this year’s event illustrated the abundance of world-class female talent within NSW.
