Gul Team riders Russ and Egor out of Rip Curl Boardmasters

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 August, 2008 : - - Round one of the 5 star WQS event at Fistral Newquay this week kicked off on the 5th August with a 2ft swell and southwesterly winds. Heat 1 saw Gul team rider and current British open champion ‘Egor’ have 6 waves in the heat of which the strongest two went towards his average score.

With Fistral’s banks not shaping up very well this summer and the southwesterly toying with the shape of the wave Egor did not get the quality of wave needed to display his powerful style. At the close of the heat Egor’s average score placed him third. Unfortunately for Egor this knocked him out of the competition, as the first two proceed to the next round (Frances Simon Marchand and Spain’s Txaber Trojaola).

After coming back from injury and storming the White Stuff event at Watergate Russ Surfed in heat 5 of round 1. The swell built through out the day and with the dropping tide the wave gained more shape giving some workable rights and lefts. However the period of the waves were not in Russels favour and did not allow him gain a good wave count that would help his average score. This resulted in a heat over all result of 3rd behind the reunion island Rafael Ayme and the USA’s Shaun Burrell.

Unlucky for both the Gul boys but they will pull through as the season progresses.
