2008 Sacred Craft consumer surfboard expo sells out
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 August, 2008 : - - Encinitas -- Producers of the SACRED CRAFT Consumer Surfboard Expo have announced a sell out. A record number of exhibitors will celebrate the surfboard as a cultural icon. Upwards of 90 exhibitors will pack 150 booths at the Wyland Exhibit Hall on the Del Mar Fairgrounds on October 11 & 12 2008 to honor the craft of shaping, and the craft that makes us who we are.
"Last years expo was so packed we had to get a bigger hall, and the surfboard industry responded," said SACRED CRAFT producer Scott Bass. "This year SACRED CRAFT is going to be even bigger. We've got seminars, live shaping, hundreds of surfboards, raffles, pro surfers, and most importantly the industry's top shapers right here for surfers to speak with. It's the world's largest surfboard shop."
Surfers and consumers will witness the one of a kind "Tribute to the Masters Shape-off" honoring Bill Caster presented by Ice-nine Foam Works. Six shapers have been chosen to replicate a classic CASTER surfboard design with the winner receiving $1000 and a full page ad in SURFING magazine.
The six shapers for 2008 are: from Santa Cruz Ward Coffey; from Los Angles Matt Calvani; from Orange County Timmy Patterson; from San Diego Ned McMahon and Chris Christenson; and from Florida, last years "Tribute to the Masters Shape-off" champion, Ricky Carroll.
The finished blanks will be judged by friends of Bill Caster including Hank Warner, Bird Huffman, Peter St. Pierre, Chris Ahrens & Ernie Higgins. The finished blanks will be glassed and auctioned off to help off-set the CASTER family legal costs in protecting the CASTER logo.
In addition to the "Tribute to the Masters Shape-off", surfers and consumers will also witness pro surfers Rob Machado, Joel Tudor, Brad Gerlach and Pat O'Connell enter the foam fray as they all create shaped surfboards of their own to be auctioned off for the charity of their choice. Benefiting the pro surfers board auction will be The Rob Machado Foundation, SurfAid International, and the Surfrider Foundation.
Two custom-made shaping bays are presented by Akeena Solar and WetGlass EVF and being produced by CNC Dynamics. The shaping bays have glass all the way around so surfers and consumers at the expo will be able to see all the nuances of the shaping experience. Dave Daum of Kings Paddle Sports will give an "in bay" shaping seminar for all to see and hear.
Daum will be mic'd up and be taking questions from inquiring surfers and consumers regarding shaping technique, tricks, and insights--anything you want to know about the craft of shaping surfboards.
Also on tap for 2008, SACRED CRAFT presents the "Craftsman Expression Session for Charity" presented by HANSENS BOARDROOM. Select surfboard manufacturers are creating exquisite, unique, out-of-the-box surfboards that will be on display at SACRED CRAFT for all to see and to bid on. All of the "Craftsman Expression Session for Charity" surfboards will be available for bid via silent auction at SACRED CRAFT, and will also be on display/silent auction for one month at HANSENS BOARDROOM.
The winning surfboard designer will receive a $1000 gift certificate to HANSEN SURFBOARDS as well as a "DESIGN FORUM" feature in SURFER magazine. "Craftsman Expression Session for Charity" participants include Matt Biolos, Craig Hollingsworth, Dave Daum, Danny Hess and Stu Kenson.
Seminars hosted by Sam George and brought to you by BUBBLEGUM Surf Wax this year include David Rensin, author of the new Miki Dora biography "All For a Few Perfect Waves: The Audacious Life and Legend of Rebel Surfer Miki Dora", Harold Walker and Jon Stillman from Ice-Nine Foam Works, Dirk Hosmer from Akeena Solar, Artist Drew Brophy - Board Art w/ Paint Pens, "Legends Talk Story", plus others TBA.
