Xcel's Nathaniel Curran Wins 6-Star Sooruz Lacanua Pro
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 August, 2008 : - - Haleiwa -- Xcel team rider Nathaniel Curran has won the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star Sooruz Lacanua Pro (Lacanua Ocean, France), defeating Dion Atkinson of Australia in an exciting 35-minute final.
Nathaniel CurranThe win keeps Curran atop the ASP WQS ratings and is a huge boost towards his quest to qualify for the 2009 ASP World Tour. Curran has turned in standout results this summer, having recently won the ASP WQS 6-Star U.S. Open of Surfing (Huntington Beach, California), and placing fifth in the ASP WQS 6-Star Yumeya Billabong Pro (Japan).
"I'm overwhelmed at the moment, and am just going to enjoy and keep having fun in my heats," Curran told the ASP after his impressive win. "If I can make the ASP World Tour this year, I'll just be over the moon."
Curran's final heat against Dion Atkinson was a hard-fought battle in wind-blown two to three foot surf, with Curran rallying in the final five minutes against Atkinson, who had led for the majority of the head-to-head heat. In the end, Curran's exciting blend of tactical and progressive surfing ultimately triumphed over Atkinson, who was competing in his first-ever ASP WQS final.
Curran, 24, was just 15 when his older brother and former ASP World Tour surfer Tim Curran won the same Lacanua title. "I remember that look on the face of my brother when he won the event, and I can't believe I made it," Curran continued to the ASP. "I'm trying not to pay attention to the ratings and take it one heat at a time."
