12th Annual East Coast Wahine Championships

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 August, 2008 : - - Wrightsville Beach --  The 12th Annual East Coast Wahine Championships was held August 16-17th in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. Approximately 150 wahines traveled to southeastern North Carolina to compete in Shortboard, Longboard, Bodyboard, and Novice.

Small, contestable waves held through the weekend. From the experienced Goddesses(40 and up) to the youngest Guppies (10 and under), inspiration and admiration was the feeling had by all. Carol Bourque, whose daughter MT placed 3rd in Grommette Shortboard and also in Girls Longboard said, “ nothing could end our summer vacation better. School started today and memories of the ECWC will definitely sustain us.”

Nineteen-year-old Mallory Turner of Orange Park, Florida made her first appearance at the ECWC and went home with two titles, three trophies, and $350. Mallory won the Open Shortboard division as well as Jr. Women Longboard. She also took third place in Jr. Women Shortboard.

School age competitors had the opportunity to apply for four $500 savings bonds that will be awarded on September 30th. The Julie Ann Foundation made the bonds possible with hopes surfers will use the money for higher education.
