Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 August, 2008 : - - Seignosse, France - It was a short day of competition on Day 3 of the waiting period of the Rip Curl Pro pres. by Sprite as four heats only were done this morning getting the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star Prime event to its second round.

Dion Atkinson (AUS), 22, runner up in the ASP WQS 6-Star event in Lacanau and WQS No. 18 before coming to Hoseegor, was in top form in Heat 24 of Round 1 finding his way out of the tricky testing six to eight foot (2 to 2.5 meter) waves on offer to advance through to Round 2.

Atkinson, who posted an impressive 17.33 point heat tally (out of a possible 20) dominated his battle and will meet some serious opponents when Round 2 resumes including ASP World Tour surfer Neco Padaratz (BRA), Australia’s wonderkid and Rip Curl wild card Owen Wright and Jean Da Silva (BRA).

"It was pretty fun down there," Atkinson said. "I am in a very good shape since the Lacanau Pro last week. I just tried to surf my best in these messy conditions today and it worked out well. I had a few good waves so I am stoked I got through."

Atkinson, who secured his best result to date in Lacanau, nows stands as a favorite among the world’s best qualifiers. "I am not thinking of any ratings," Atkinson said. "I am still young and it is still a long way to the end of the year so I am not worrying about the qualification yet. I just want to have fun and keep surfing good."

Also advancing today was French talented rising competitor Vincent Duvignac (FRA) who managed to get away with a win ahead Shaun Ward (USA) and secure his ticket for another heat against top seeds Drew Courtney (AUS), Rhys Bombaci (AUS) and Marco Polo (BRA).

"It was pretty testing out there and I am stoked I found that big score," Duvignac said. "I feel at home here so it is good to get a heat out of the way and get another chance in the event."

Mike Losness (USA), who surfed first heat this morning coming straight from his excellent equal 3rd place in Lacanau last sunday, was able to get the pressure off him and secured another win. Losness, who sits No. 43 on the international ratings at the moment, was an outsider in Lacanau but has become the "Giant Killer" and will face a serious resistance when he comes up against current Top 5 WQS member Patrick Gudauskas (USA) and former ASP World Tour surfer Yuri Sodre (BRA).

The messy waves and strong currents forced organisers to put the event on hold after assessing conditions and all Round 2 surfers will meet at 7.15 AM tomorrow to get the Rip Curl Pro pres. by Sprite under pressure with the hottest action in the some of the world’s best beachbreaks.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 August, 2008 : - - Seignosse, France -- Courte journée pour ce 3ème jour de waiting période avec seulement les 4 ultimes séries du Round 1. Demain, le 2ème tour pourra enfin commencé avec notamment l’entrée en course de 3 des surfeurs de l’Euroforce.

Dion Atkinson (AUS), 22 ans, finaliste du WQS 6 star de Lacanau et actuel N°18 du classement, était au top de sa forme pour la série 24, dans de grosses conditions de 2,5 mètres, qui lui ont permis de se qualifier pour le 2ème tour.

Atkinson, qui a scoré un impressionnant 17.33 sur 20, a rapidement dominé cette série, mais devra rencontrer de très sérieux concurrents, le surfer ASP World Tour Neco Padaratz (BRA), le jeune superman et wild card Rip Curl Owen Wright (AUS) et le brésilien Jean Da Silva. « C’était vraiment une super série. Je me sens vraiment bien depuis mon résultat à Lacanau. J’ai essayé de donner le meilleur dans ces grosses conditions.

Et ça a plutôt bien fonctionné ! » nous commente Atkinson. Atkinson fait aujourd’hui partie des favoris pour l  qualification dans le Top 45 en 2009. « Je ne pense pas à mon classement. Je suis encore jeune, j’ai le temps devant moi pour me qualifier. Je veux juste m’amuser, profiter et surfer le plus possible sur les meilleurs spots du monde. »

Egalement qualifié, le jeune français Vincent Duvignac (FR), qui a réussi une superbe performance en battant Shaun Ward (AUS) et gagnant ainsi son ticket pour la série contre Drew Courtney (AUS), Rhys Bombaci (AUS) et Marco Polo (BRA). « Ce n’était pas simple. J’ai essayé et j’ai réussi à scorer une belle vague. Je suis chez moi, je connais le spot, je suis au mieux de ma forme. J’espère pouvoir passer plusieurs séries sur cet événement et continuer à m’éclater. »

Mike Losness (USA), 3ème au Lacanau Pro, a également fait le spectacle. Tout droit débarqué de Lacanau, il a réussi à se mettre rapidement dans la compétition et a remporté sa série. Actuellement N°43 sur le circuit WQS international, il a créé la surprise du Lacanau Pro en devenant l’un des meilleurs surfeurs de ce contest.

Aujourd’hui, sur Seinosse, il devra de nouveau faire face à une sérieuse résistance, face notamment au surfeur Patrick Gudauskas (USA), actuellement dans le Top 5 WQS, et Yuri Sodre (BRA).  a grosse houle et le fort courant ont malheureusement contraint les organisateurs à reporter la compétition à demain matin.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 August, 2008 : - - Seignosse, France -- Dia corto para ese 3ra día de la waiting period con solamente las ultimas 4 series del Round 1.

Mañana, el Round 2 podrá empezar con la entrada de 3 de los surfistas del Eurofuerza. Dion Atkinson (AUS), 22 anos, finalista del WQS 6-star de Lacanau (Francia) y actual N°18 de la clasificación, estaba muy en forma para la serie 24, en, condiciones enormes de 2,5 metros, que le permitieron de cualificarse para la segunda ronda.

Atkinson, que tuvo un impresionante 17.33 sobre 20, domino rápidamente esa serie, pero tendrá que luchar contra unos concurrentes serios, el surfista ASP World Tour Neco Padaratz (BRA), el joven superman y invitación Rip Curl Owen Wright y el brasileño Jean Da Silva. “Fue una serie perfecta. Me siento muy bien desde mi resultado a Lacanau. Intenté dar el mejor de mi surf en esas condiciones.

Y creo que fonciona bastante bien!” nos comenta Atkinson. Atkinson hace parte de los favoritos para el Top 45 en 2009. “No pienso en la clasificación. A   soy muy joven, tengo tiempo para ponerme cualquier presión de resultados. Por el momento, quiero aprovechar y surfear lo mas tiempo en los mejores spots de surf del mundi.”

También cualificado, el joven francés Vincent Duvignac (FR), que consigo una buena resultado, ganando contra Shaun Ward (AUS), así yendose directamente a la segunda ronda contra Drew Courtney (AUS), Rhys Bombaci (AUS) y Marco Polo (BRA). El oleaje grande y el corriente fuerte han forzado a los organizadores de seguir el campeonato mañana por la mañana.
