    Duke's OceanFest

    Queen's Waikiki Oahu Hawaii
    17 - 24 August 2008

C4 Waterman/Honolua Surf Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) Surfing competition goes off

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 August, 2008 : - - Honolulu -- As the Olympic games takes charge of the international sporting arena, Hawaii's most famous Olympian and ambassador of Hawaii's greatest gifts to the world -- aloha and surfing -- is at the center of celebrations in his birthplace of Waikiki: Duke Kahanamoku.

The Duke's OceanFest continued today with the C4 Waterman/Honolua Surf Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) Surfing competition - a sport Duke helped pioneer towards the end of his surfing days. While the sport first surfaced in Waikiki more than half a century ago, it took a second wave of popularity for SUP to circle the globe and take center stage back where it all began.

Today, reflecting the international appeal and dynamic growth of SUP, the C4 Waterman/Honolua Surf event - part of Duke's annual birthday celebrations, attracted a record field of 84 entries from as far afield as Australia and Oregon for the opening day of competition.

With more than twice the entries of last year's inaugural event, this year's competition lineup expanded to include professional, amateur, women's and junior division. Three rounds of competition were completed today at Queen's Beach, Waikiki, determining the lineup for Saturday's finals:

    Professional:
Brian Keaulana (Makaha), Noland Martin (Makaha), Noah Shimabukuro (Kula, Maui), and female challenger Candice Appleby (Honolulu)

    Amateur:
Slater Trout (Lahaina, Maui), Stuart Murray (Australia), Dennis Matos (Waipahu), Chris Martin (Honolulu), Mike Mendez (Honolulu), Bill Ward (Haleiwa)

    Women:
Jennifer Koki (Honolulu), Tiare Lawrence (Makaha), Heather Jeppesen (Honolulu), Candice Appleby (Honolulu), Pinoi Makalena (Honolulu), Geodee Clark (Honolulu)

    Juniors:
Kawika Kinimaka (Lahaina, Maui), Brendan Bradley (Honolulu), Kai Lenny (Paia, Maui), Noah Yap (Kihei, Maui)

Stand-up paddle surfing combines the elements of two traditional Hawaiian ocean sports: canoe paddling's paddle, and longboarding's surfboard. Surfers paddle into waves and ride, always in the standing position, and are scored on critical surfing maneuvers.

Today's 2-3 foot, rolling surf at Queen's Beach was the stage and many of the sport's top exponents put on a stellar display for the thousands of tourists who are new to the sands of Waikiki and the sport of stand-up paddle surfing.

A portion of all proceeds generated through their events and on-site t-shirt sales will go to support the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation. Complete results from today's competition follow below.
