Volcom Starfish Surf Series event 2 goes off in Huntington

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 August, 2008 : - - The second stop of the Starfish Surf Series event went off at HB pier with some incredible waves. Looking at the forecast we were pretty worried about the lack of swell, but first light Saturday morning we were greeted with some 4-6 ft waves. The turnout was one of the biggest we've ever seen with sign ups reaching maximum capacity by 6:50 AM!

By seven, the lineup was already packed, but luckily we had the help of the Huntington Beach lifeguards to clear the water with a ski and buoy. As soon as the first heat hit the water we knew we were in for some amazing surfing. The waves were going off and the surf talent was right at the same level.

It was insane to see such a huge turnout from the Girls and they definitely didn't disappoint, throwing spray that would have gotten Olympic medals revoked under suspicion of steroid use. It was a cutthroat battle all day for the divas, but in the end it came down to a battle between local, Jenna Balester, and traveling shredder, Demi Boelsteri.

When the dust settled it was Boelsteri who came out on top, claiming a mental hand painted trophy, Riviera complete skateboard and a heap of other goodies. The Groms were fired up and looked more blood thirsty then a group of 13-year-old girls at an N'Sync concert. The pre-pubescent people had the judges wondering whether or not they were watching a Pro-Am heat with their tail drifts and air reverses.

The only thing more impressive then the surfing was the commitment many of the kids showed, with competitors coming from all over California, the East Coast and even Hawaii. In the end, it came down to a battle of East vs. West with Cam Richards from the East Coast taking the win, and an insane electric guitar.

New Volcom rider, Parker Coffin took second, with Kaikea Elias, Colin Moran, Trevor Thorton, and Weston Williams rounding out the final. The Juniors took to the water like a pack of wild Hyenas and surfed an incredibly long day. The final ended up being a locals only show with each competitor trying to out do the next for his claim to the hometown turf.

Victor Done looked like the favorite when he threw down an 8.5, but failed to find the backup waves he needed. This left just enough room for Ford Archbold to squeak by, getting three solid scores and the first place trophy. Christian Saenz, Evan Kane, Bobby Okvist, and Vance Smith filled the remaining spots in the final.

The Pro-Am division talent was huge and after the quarters and semis we couldn't wait to see the final. Just as we expected, the guys did not disappoint, seamlessly linking waves all the way through to the inside. Macy Mullen, the winner of the first Starfish event this year, looked like a favorite, especially after a huge upside down reverse which won him the Electric Volt Thrower move of the day, 50 dollars of electrified cash, and some high voltage shades.

As the five minute horn rang, Chris Abad had a pretty solid lead and looked in position to take the $500 win. However, Brandon Guilmette, had a different plan. He grabbed a wave in the dying seconds which he surfed all the way through to the inside, giving him a half point advantage over Abad, along with the win, $500 cash, and tons of gear. Robert Patterson, Jake Kirschenbaum, Macy Mullen, and Jason Harris rounded out the final.
