Na Papa Australian Surfmasters Titles turns it on again
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 August, 2008 : - - Port Macquarie, NSW -- Another epic day of waves greeted competitors for day two of the Na Papa Australian Surfmasters Titles, heralding dominant performances from Australia’s best. It was the Open Men and Women who shone the brightest, with the standard of surfing matching the near-perfect two metre conditions.
Reigning Over 28 Women’s Na Papa Australian Champion, Jenny Boggis (Lennox Head, NSW), was electric in her first round heat. “The waves are so good out there,” Boggis said after racking up a total heat score of 17.50 (out of a possible 20), including a phenomenal 9.50 (out of a possible 10).
Boggis, who has competed at the highest level of international surfing, is looking ominous at the Na Papa Australian Surfmasters Titles. “I’m just trying to have fun out in the water and just concentrate on my own surfing,” she said. “I’ve got nothing to lose so I’m going have a good crack.”
With the likes of Melissa Sherringham (Wamberal, NSW) registering a total heat score of 17.00 (out of a possible 10); Tara Christie (Kawana Waters, QLD), Emma Allen (Sunshine Coast, QLD) and Lara Reading (Wallabi Point, NSW) pushing the level of female surfing to new levels, Boggis is impressed with the surfing on show.
“Female surfing is so strong across the country,” Boggis stated. “And it’s only getting better, I have to really be on my game this week.”
Featuring an eclectic combination of competitors, the Na Papa Australian Surfmasters Titles sees surfers spanning all ages competing for 10 prestigious Na Papa national titles. Stephen Walsh (Lennox Head, NSW) dominated the requalification rounds of the Open Men’s division, tearing apart the Town Beach right-handers with precision.
Walsh was on-fire throughout his heat, en-route to racking up a total heat score of 17.25 (out of a possible 20). Nick Squires (North Wollongong, NSW) also managed to solidify his position in the next round with a brilliant display of attacking surfing. Joining Walsh and Squires in the next round was Dylan Hannah (Cronulla, NSW), Duncan McNicol (Caves Beach, NSW), Philippe Didelot (Seaford, SA) and James Sinclair (Airley Inlet, VIC).
