Super Sunday opens Na Papa Australian Surfmasters Titles

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 August, 2008 : - - Port Macquarie, NSW -- The Na Papa Australian Surfmasters Titles opened in perfect, two-metre conditions today, as scores soared through the roof. Featuring an eclectic combination of competitors, the Na Papa Australian Surfmasters Titles sees surfers spanning all ages competing for 10 prestigious Na Papa national titles.

And they didn’t disappoint, as competitors consistently locked in excellent scores, nearing the perfect end of the judging scale. Reigning Na Papa Australian Surfmasters Over 28 Men’s champion, Wayne Hudson (Lake Cathie, NSW) was one such competitor in fine form. “I felt good out there this morning,” Hudson said after his early morning heat. “I’ve been struggling with a knee injury of late, so it felt really good to get through that heat.”

A Port Macquarie local, Hudson led the way, displaying a crisp arsenal of backhand surfing. “I’m really keen to win,” he stated. “Everyone here is keen to win and I’m no different. It would be awesome to win at home,” Hudson added.

The early morning heats saw the Open Men go ballistic on all that Town Beach through at them, accruing massive scores along the way.

Cahill Bell-Warren (Bells Beach, VIC) scored an 8.00 (out of a possible 10), Matt Bemrose (Curl Curl, NSW) scored an 8.50 (out of a possible 10), Stephen Hughes (Fairhaven, VIC) was awarded an 8.65 (out of a possible 10), but it was Todd Gaudie (Willunga, SA) who stole the show.

En-route to scoring the highest single wave score of the day, with a 9.00 (out of a possible 10), Gaudie was the early morning standout. “It’s unreal out there,” Gaudie said. “The waves are pumping and I was lucky enough to get into a good rhythm,” he added.

Travelling over to Port Macquarie from South Australia, Gaudie is impressed with what he’s seen so far. “This is such a great set-up and to come away with the whole South Australian team is so much fun,” he said. “It’s awesome.”
