Top surfers come to conquer the 'Sea Urchin' in Ericeira, Portugal    > Portuguese embaixo

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 August, 2008 : - - Ericeira, Portugal -- Buondi Billabong Pro Portugal starts tomorrow (26th) in Ericeira. This WQS stage with a 6 star graduation, will be slightly receive almost two hundred of the most influent surfers in the tour, from the five continents. They will be fighting for135.000 US dollars prize money and the winner will get 2500 points for the circuit ranking.

The WQS is at a turning point; the lack of points added at this stage for some surfers can result in a need to score in Brazil and Hawaii where the locals dominate. On the other hand a strong result can guarantee their presence in the World Tour earlier.

One of the biggest news in this year’s Buondi Billabong Pro Portugal is the new trophy, a big size sea urchin that will be in the hands of the winner and will be the new image of this stop that is becoming a mythical, and deserves a trophy with a strong symbolism.

Other news is the wildcards that Billabong left in the hands of the Portuguese surfers Ruben Gonzalez and João Guedes, and also of one of their most promising young surfer, Marcos San Segundo, a Basque athlete with 19 years old, who won the first stop of the WQS in Europe this year, and will have the opportunity in Ribeira d’Ilhas to challenge some of the best surfers in the world.

Good waves are expected during all the week in Ericeira guaranteeing a great show in the competition. With the best surfers in the water, mainly the national star Tiago Pires, the public affluence will increase, and that will offer a great atmosphere to this Buondi Billabong Pro Portugal.

Also in these six days of contest the public can try many leisure activities available in the event area. On the event’s last weekend it will be held on Ribeira d’Ilhas a music festival, getting together surf and music at the beach. Tickets are accessible at www.ticketline.pt

António Pedro from Alfarroba, organizer of this event, hopes that the new trophy can be a good incentive for the future: “The new trophy symbolizes the surf in Ericeira and I wish surfers start to come here for the championship but also for that fantastic Urchin. I hope this trophy will still be given to the surfers in twenty years from now.”

À Conquista do Ouriço, na Ericeira Buondi Billabong Pro Portugal – WQS 6* - Ericeira - Portugal

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 August, 2008 : - - Ericeira, Portugal --  A já habitual etapa do circuito WQS da Ericeira, Buondi Billabong Pro Portugal, começa amanhã, dia 26 de Agosto e conta com a participação de 192 surfistas dos cinco continentes, que vêm disputar um prémio de 135.000 dólares. O vencedor ganha 2500 pontos para o ranking do circuito de qualificação.

O WQS está a entrar numa fase decisiva, em que a falta de resultados para alguns surfistas pode levar todas as decisões para as últimas pernas que se realizam no Brasil e no Havai e que são dominadas pelos locais. Por outro lado, um forte resultado pode garantir, antecipadamente, a presença no World Tour em 2008.

Uma das grandes novidades no Buondi Billabong Pro Portugal é o novo troféu, um ouriço-do-mar gigante que será levantado pelo vencedor e que será uma das novas imagens desta etapa que, por já ser mítica, precisava de um troféu à medida.

Outra novidade são os wildcards que a Billabong decidiu atribuir a três atletas, de modo a que entrem mais à frente na prova, e que vão para os surfistas: Ruben Gonzalez, João Guedes e o último a marca deixou nas mãos de um dos seus mais promissores jovens surfistas Marcos San Segundo, um surfista Basco, com apenas 19 anos, que ganhou a primeira etapa do WQS do ano na Europa e que terá a oportunidade de testar o seu surf junto de alguns dos melhores surfistas do mundo.

Esperam-se boas ondas toda a semana na Ericeira, com espectáculo garantido durante  toda a competição. Com a entrada na água dos melhores surfistas, principalmente as primeiras baterias de Tiago Pires, que traz sempre muitos fãs a Ribeira D’Ilhas, espera-se uma enorme afluência de público, que dará um grande ambiente ao Buondi Billabong Pro Portugal.

Ao longo dos seis dias de prova haverá sempre muitas actividades a decorrer na área do campeonato, com os patrocinadores a fazerem de tudo para que todos na praia se possam distrair sempre que uma bateria não lhes interessar tanto, ou mesmo para descansar um pouco de sessões ininterruptas de surf  de alta qualidade nas melhores ondas da Europa.

António Pedro da Alfarroba, empresa organizadora do evento, espera que o troféu desenhado este ano seja uma influência para o futuro: “O troféu simboliza o surf na Ericeira, espero que haja um desejo grande de ganhá-lo e se houver campeonato daqui a vinte anos, que este seja o seu troféu.” O Buondi Billabong Pro Portugal terá mais um factor especial este ano que, o director desta prova há já alguns anos, não esquece:

“Todos temos assistido à evolução do Tiago Pires nos últimos anos. Ele vai surfar neste campeonato, pela primeira vez como membro do top 45, e há uma grande esperança vê-lo a dar-se bem, uma vez mais, para continuarmos a assistir às suas exibições, ao mais alto nível, pelo mundo fora.”
