Brazilian surfers rule Ericeira on first day of Buondi Billabong Pro Portugal    > Portuguese embaixo

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 August, 2008 : - - The Buondi Billabong Pro Portugal, a six stars WQS event, started today at Ribeira D’Ilhas, in Ericeira, Portugal. Two days ago, this beach was the stage of the Billabong Pro Junior. Now, it’s time for 192 of the best surfers in the world to fight for a victory, trying to achieve those important points to reach the restrict circuit of the top 45.

Today the waves were 2 foot with light winds. In the morning heats Masatoshi Ohno, from Japan, the American Brad Ettinger and the Australian Luke Cheadle were some of the winners: ”I’ve surfed four waves and I made 8 points in one of then and 9 points in the other, I’m pretty happy! I’ll try to go as far as I can. I love to surf here in Ribeira d’Ilhas, in fact it’s the third time that I am here in Ericeira to surf”, said Cheadle.

The Brazilian surfer Charlie Brown, a rookie in WQS, did a great heat also and in the end he was very happy: “First of all I want to thank God for being here today. I arrived yesterday from France, I lost my luggage and today I had to surf with a friend’s board and I managed to pass my heat, so I’m thinking my luck is changing!”.

The Brazilian contingent showed how powerful their surfers are, as seven of them managed to get to the second round - Danilo Costa, Guilherme Herdy, Marco Polo, Paulo Moura, Robson Santos, Dunga Neto and Wiggoli Dantas. Dantas, who came directly from Billabong Pro Junior, continues in good form. He begins this WQS with a fantastic score of 9.80 - the best wave of the contest so far.

For the Portuguese the day wasn’t so encouraging, despite some good moments, the locals didn’t make it through. Only Nicolau Von Rupp, German-Portuguese surfer, had a good result: “the Pro Junior went wrong for me, because I’ve finished in the round of 32. I wasn’t in my best shape, but now I fell more confident. My friends are here supporting me and my boards feel great. The final is always in my mind, but for now, I just want to reach the best qualification that I can”.

The afternoon started well for the Australian surfers. Seven of them had the chance to keep fighting another day. Chad Compton, Anthony Petrusco, Ettinger and Shaun Burrel, showed that the American contingent came to fight for a victory. They all got through to the next stage with good performances.

António Pedro, the contest director, talks about the next days: “We expect good swell and good waves for the next days. It will have perfect conditions for the athletes to show their skills.”

Contingente Brasileiro em Força no Primeiro Dia: Buondi Billabong Pro Portugal – WQS 6* - Ericeira - Portugal

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 August, 2008 : - - Ericeira, Portugal --  Ribeira d’Ilhas, que conheceu há dois dias os vencedores do Billabong Pro Júnior, torna a ser palco de uma das mais importantes provas do surf mundial. Teve início hoje mais uma etapa do Campeonato do Mundial de Surf, a contar para o circuito WQS, o Buondi Billabong Pro Portugal que decorre nesta praia até ao próximo Domingo.

192 dos melhores surfistas do mundo disputam esta etapa, estando em jogo 2500 importantes pontos que poderão ajudar o vencedor a chegar à elite do surf mundial: o restrito circuito World Championship Tour. Esta etapa de 6 estrelas conta ainda com um prémio monetário no valor de 135.000 dólares, a distribuir pelos atletas melhor classificados. 

As ondas estiveram hoje na ordem do meio metro, com os primeiros atletas a fazerem-se à água pelas 8h15. Dos primeiros heats da manhã passaram à fase seguinte Masatoshi Ohno do Japão, o americano Brad Ettinger e o australiano Luke Cheadle que ficou muito satisfeito com a sua prestação: “Em quatro ondas, consegui fazer uma de 8 e outra de 9 pontos, estou muito contente! Vou tentar ir o mais longe possível nesta prova, até porque adoro surfar aqui e já é o meu terceiro ano consecutivo de provas em Ribeira d’Ilhas”, esclareceu Cheadle.

O brasileiro Charlie Brown, estreante nas andanças do WQS, também não cabia em si de contente ao vencer o seu heat: “Antes de mais quero agradecer a Deus por estar hoje aqui. Cheguei ontem de França, tive muitas complicações no aeroporto, pois perdi as bagagens, surfei com a prancha de um amigo, dormi apenas duas horas e consegui passar este heat em primeiro! Parece que a minha sorte mudou”.

O contigente brasileiro que já nos habituou a um elevado nível de surf teve razões para festejar já que continuam em prova Danilo Costa, Guilherme Herdy, Marco Polo, Paulo Moura, Robson Santos, Bruno Santos, Dunga Neto e Wiggoli Dantas que veio directamente do Billabong Pro Júnior. Esta jovem promessa brasileira continua a dar cartas em Ribeira d’Ilhas, uma vez que inicia este campeonato com um fantástico 9.80, a melhor onda do dia até ao momento.

Para o contingente Português o destino esteve menos sorridente, apesar de nos terem brindado com bons momentos de surf. Destaques para Francisco Henriques que vinha duma lesão recente e Alexandre Ferreira que perdeu nos últimos dez segundos para o australiano Steve Noble.
Em prova esta manhã, apenas o luso-alemão Nicolau Von Rupp conseguiu passar para a ronda seguinte, em segundo lugar: “o Pro Júnior correu-me mal, pois fiquei-me pelos oitavos. Sentia-me fora de ritmo, agora já estou mais confiante.

Tenho aqui os meus amigos a apoiar-me e o meu material impecável. Claro que a final é sempre um objectivo, mas a curto prazo quero é chegar o mais longe possível.” Por seu lado, os australianos chegaram em força a Ribeira d’Ilhas. Luke Cheadle, Steve Noble, Dale Lovelock, Beau Atchison, Clancy Dawson, James Woods, Michael Spencer e Luke Campbell passaram todos para a ronda seguinte.

Destaque ainda para os americanos Chad Compton e Anthony Petrusco que lideraram as suas baterias e Brad Ettinger e Shaun Burrel que atingiram a fase seguinte ao obter um segundo lugar.

António Pedro, da Alfarroba Ideias e Eventos, tem boas perspectivas para os seis dias de prova: “Parece que vamos ter uma subida de ondulação para os próximos dias. Sobretudo para amanhã e depois, esperamos muito boas ondas, o que vai ajudar ao espectáculo com toda a certeza, pois os atletas poderão brilhar ainda mais”.
