Cronulla leg of Red Bull Junior Surf Masters finishes
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 August, 2008 : - - After an exhilarating day of action, local surfer Joe Sear has been crowned the winner of the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters Qualifier event at Cronulla. It was a popular victory for the 19-year-old Cronulla surfer who entered the event as the hot favourite and impressed judges and spectators throughout the day with a polished display of smooth, mistake-free surfing.
Sear edged ahead of Currarung surfer Jordi Watson who also threw some huge, spray-throwing turns in the thrilling 25-minute final. "I'm pumped," said Sear afterwards. "The conditions were pretty challenging out there but I managed to find a couple of long ones which linked all the way to shore." Sear is hoping to make a full-time career out of surfing.
"I'm doing the Australian Junior Series at the moment and hope to do the World Qualifying Series in the future. I want to take my surfing all the way. I'm stoked with this win today - the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters has been such a sick event. They've really pimped it out. I can't wait for next weekend."
Cronulla's Dylan Hayllar finished third, while Queenscliff's Daniel Karren took fourth place. All four will continue onto the next stage of competition (The Trials) where they will face finalists from the other four qualifying events (20 surfers in total). The top four finalists from the Trials will then face a field of the best 16 Pro Junior Surfers in Australia, chosen by the current ASP World Champion, Mick Fanning.
Head judge, Scott Baxter was impressed with the standard of surfing on display at Cronulla today. "There has been some excellent surfing throughout the day and we've had a number of waves score high eights (out of ten). Local Cronulla surfers such as Dylan Hayllar and Joe Sear have been the stand outs. Both of these guys have been surfing at the standard you need to do well in national junior events."
Baxter is looking forward to judging more surf action at the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters when it wraps up and an overall winner is crowned next weekend. The final three days of competition will see the introduction of never-before-seen contest format called 'Torched' which is sure to make things interesting for competitors and spectators alike.
