Inside ASP: Meet Current European Junior No. 3 Marc Lacomare

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 August, 2008 : - - Marc Lacomare (Hossegor, FRA), 18, has been travelling around the world for a couple of years already cutting his teeth at all Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Pro Junior and World Qualifying Series (WQS) events, and slowly rises as a solid leader of the next generation of French and European surfers.

Lacomare, who won the prestigious ASP Grade-3 Rip Curl Pro Junior in solid five foot (1.5 meter) barrels in April, is currently sitting No. 3 on the ASP European Junior ratings and will head to the next and final event of the year with a slight but nontheless serious opportunity to grab his maiden regional crown counting on an early elimination of ratings’ leader Maxime Huscenot (REU).

"I have had a good year and that win in Portugal last April was a great confidence boost," Lacomare said. "But I had a shocker at the ASP Grade-4 event in Tenerife after that, and missed another opportunity to catch-up with Maxime (Huscenot) here last weekend. I did good at the smaller events though but I will have to be ready for the showdown in October."

Lacomare, who has been following the footsteps of older friends and surfing stars Miky Picon (FRA), Tiago Pires (PRT), Jeremy Flores (FRA) or Michel Bourez (PYF), won two events this year on the Junior tour and started competing at several WQS contests slowly getting used to life on "The Grind".

"All the oler guys help us a lot and are really give us some advice thanks to their experience," Lacomare said. "On the junior tour there is not the same strenght and European group because we all compete against eachother inside Europe but what has been happening recently with four Europeans making it to the ASP World Tour is a great boost."

Lacomare, who was raised in the world class beachbreaks of Hossegor in France, built his surfing with solid grounds and is already seen as a great tube-rider with the potential to beat any surfer when the swell hits the five to six foot range.

Lacomare made his first ASP WQS final at 16-years-old in Tenerife two years ago, placed equal 9th in the Rip Curl Pro Super Series last year in front of his home crowd losing to ASP Top 45 rookie Dane Reynolds (USA), and should be attending his second ASP World Junior championships (WJC) at Narabeen if he remains in the regional junior Top 5 at the end of the year.

At 18-years-old, Lacomare will be a serious assett to the next French generation and could one day become a member of the prestigious ASP World Tour if he can stay at his best.

"I put everything in the Juniors this year but it is a year of transition as well and I will probably be doing more and more WQS next year," Lacomare said. "I am definitely hoping to keep improving and learning. I will see how things go but I am still focused on this last Pro Junior event in october."
