Curren Upsets Mulanovich and Gilmore Flares at Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle         > Francaise ci-dessous, Espanol abajo

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 August, 2008 : - - Seignosse France -- The opening day of the Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle, event No. 3 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, was treated to a full day of action, with the first three rounds of competition completed in improving three-to-four foot (1.5 metre) waves at Les Bourdaines in the Southwest of France.

Lee Ann Curren (FRA), 19, winner of the Rip Curl Pro Junior and wildcard in the Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle, created the upset of the day, eliminating defending Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle champion and current ratings leader on the ASP Women’s World Tour Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 25, in Round 3 today.

“I am just overwhelmed right now,” Curren said. “Sofia (Mulanovich) is one of my favorite surfers and to beat her at home in front of everyone is really special. It’s something I will always remember.” Curren put the pressure on her Peruvian opponent early with strong forehand rides before closing the door with a crowd-pleasing 8.00 out of a possible 10.

“I wasn’t really nervous,” Curren said. “I have nothing to lose out here and I’m just happy to be in the competition surfing against the best surfers in the world. I am just trying to have fun and do my best out there.” Curren will face current Australian powerbroker Jessi Miley-Dyer, 22, in Quarterfinal 2 tomorrow.

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, reigning ASP Women’s World Champion, took top honors today, netting the highest heat total of the event, a 19.50 out of a possible 20, including a perfect 10 for a phenomenal forehand hack-to-fin-slide followed by a critical closeout re-entry.

“I was able to nail a pretty solid turn at the start and the wave stood up for me long enough to cram another turn there on the end section,” Gilmore said. “The conditions out there this afternoon are fast righthanders which really suit my surfing so that’s good for me.”

With the elimination of Mulanovich from Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle competition, Gilmore stands to gain some ground on the Peruvian in the hunt for the ASP Women’s World Title.  “I was out in the water when I watched Lee Ann (Curren) take out Sofia (Mulanovich) and that fired me up a bit,” Gilmore said. “It’s good as it allows me to gain a little ground in the ratings and hopefully I can keep going here in France.”

Gilmore will face off against current ASP Women’s World No. 11 Jacqueline Silva (BRA), 29, in Quarterfinal 3 tomorrow.

Miley-Dyer, current No. 9 on the ASP Women’s World Tour, missed the opening event of the ’08 season, but has since rebounded, securing a 5th at Bells before climbing to current No. 2 on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS).  The young Australian continued her momentum today, winning both her Round 1 and Round 3 heats in impressive form.

“I was injured for the first event of the season but I think it was good in a way in that it made me sit back and really appreciate what I do and really want to compete again,” Miley-Dyer said. “I was able to get a fifth at Bells, and I think this season I’m just working on being more consistent in terms of my results.”

Surf-report.com, official forecasters for the 2008 Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle, are calling for a slight decrease in swell tomorrow with improved wind conditions. The 2008 Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle Champion may be crowned by day’s end tomorrow. Up first will be Amee Donohoe (AUS), 27, vs. Layne Beachley, 36, in Quarterfinal 1.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 11am for a possible 11:30am start.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 August, 2008 : - - Seignosse France -- Une journée haute en actions pour ce premier jour du Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle, 3ème étape du circuit professionnel ASP Women's World Tour, avec les 3 premiers tours bouclés dans des conditions de 1m à 1,5m sur le spot des Bourdaines à Seignosse.
 
Lee Ann Curren (FRA), 19 ans, vainqueur du Rip Curl Pro Junior et wildcard pour le Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle, a créé la surprise de la journée en éliminant au 3ème tour, Sofia Mulanovitch (PER), 25 ans, vainqueur du Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle 2007 et actuelle leader du classement ASP Women's World Tour.
 
"Je suis en super forme en ce moment" commente Curren. « Sofia (Mulanovitch) est une de mes surfeuses préférées et j'en reviens pas de l'avoir battu à la maison, devant tout le monde. C'est quelque chose que je n'oublierai jamais ! »
 
En ouvrant le score avec une bonne vague, Curren a mis la pression sur sa concurrente péruvienne très tôt dans la série et a terminé avec une superbe vague notée 8 points sur 10 pour le plus grand plaisir du public.
 
" Je n'étais pas vraiment stressée" comment Curren. « J'ai rien à perdre ici, je profite juste de pouvoir surfer en compétition contre les meilleures surfeuses du monde ; j'essaye de prendre un maximum de plaisir et de surfer de mon mieux. » Curren affrontera la puissante australienne, Jessi Miley-Dyer, 22 ans, demain dans le quart de finale N°2.
 
Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20 ans, Championne du Monde en titre du circuit ASP Women's World, a remporté les honneurs aujourd'hui avec le plus gros total de l'événement, un impressionnant 19.50 points sur 20, avec notamment une vague parfaite notée 10 points.
 
« J'ai réussi à faire une grosse manœuvre d'emblé et ensuite la vague est restée assez longue pour que je puisse refaire un bon virage en fin de section » déclare Gilmore. « Les conditions cette après-midi offre des droites très rapides, ce qui convient bien à mon style de surf ».
 
Avec l'élimination de Mulanovich, Gilmore risquait de prendre des points d'avance sur le Péruvienne pour le titre de championne du monde ASP. " J'étais en train de surfer pendant la série de Lee Ann (Curren) et Sofia (Mulanovich) et ça m'a motivé" commente Gilmore. « C'est bien car ça me permet de prendre de l'avance au classement et j'espère aller loin dans la compétition. »
 
Gilmore retrouvera en quart de finale l'actuelle 11ème du classement, Jacqueline Silva (BRA), 29 ans.

Miley-Dyer, actuelle 9ème au classement ASP Women's World Tour, n'a pas pu participer à la première compétition de la saison, mais réussi néanmoins à terminer 5ème à Bells et se classe aussi 2ème sur le tour ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS). La jeune Australienne poursuit ses bons résultats aujourd'hui en s'imposant dans le 1er et le 3ème Tour.
 
" J'étais blessée pour la première épreuve de la saison mais finalement je pense que c'était pas mal dans le sens où j'ai pu me poser un peu et vraiment apprécier ce que je fais. Je suis prête resurfer vite en compétition » déclare Miley-Dyer. « J'ai réussi à décrocher la 5ème place à Bells, et cette année j'essaye juste d'être constante dans mes résultats. »

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 August, 2008 : - - Seignosse France -- El día de abierta del Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle, evento N°3 del ASP Women’s World Tour, fue muy intenso con los 3 primeros rounds de campeonato, con olas de 1,5 metro, en Las Bourdaines, en Francia.

Lee Ann Curren (FR), 19 anos, ganadora del Rip Curl Pro Junior y wildcard del Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle, fue la sorpresa, eliminando a la campeona de la edición 2007, y actual leader del circuito mundial, Sofia Mulanovich (PER) durante la ronda 3.

“Estoy en otro mundo. Sofia es una de mis surfistas preferidas y ganar contra ella, aquí, en Francia, delante a mi familia, a mis amigos, es increíble. Creo que lo recordaré toda mi vida.” Nos cuenta Lee Ann.

Empezando la serie con un poderoso forehand ride, Curren puso directamente la presión a la peruviana, acabando la lucha con un 8.00.
“No estaba muy nerviosa, No había nada que perder aquí. Ya estaba super contenta de hacer este campeonato contra las mejores surfistas del mundo, además, aquí en casa. Quería aprovechar, divertirme y dar el mejor de mi surf.”

Lee Ann Curren encontrará a la poderosa australiana, Jessi Miley-Dyer, 22 años, en la 2nda ¼ de final.

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20 años, Campeona del Mundo ASP, ganó todos los honores, teniendo la mejor combinación del evento, un 19.50 sobre 20, incluyendo la nota perfecta de 10 para un extraordinario forehand Hack-to-fin-slide, más un difícil closeout re-entry.

“Las condiciones eran perfectas para mi surf, estaban mas de derechas, todo bien para mi. Podía coger un buen turn al principio y la ola se abro delante de mi, para que haga otro turn al final de la sección.” Con la eliminación de Mulanovich del Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle, Gilmore está en un buen camino para la última lucha contra la Peruviana Mulanovich para el titulo mundial.

“Estaba en la playa, mirando a Lee Ann (Curren) salir a Sofia (Mulanovich). Y me dio cuenta de la importancia de esa serie. Está muy bien para mi, estar un poco más adelante en la clasificación, y espero ganar aquí en Francia.” Nos comenta Gilmore. Gilmore encontrará al actual N°11 del ASP Women’s World Tour Jacqueline Silva (BRA), 29 años, en el 3ro ¼ Final.

Miley-Dyer, actual N°9, fallo el evento de abertura de la temporada 2008, pero desde este, aseguro un 5ta plaza a Bells Beach, subiendo al N°2 del ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS). La joven australiana sigue en el buen camino, ganando las 2 series, en la ronda 1 y la 3. Jessi enseño un surf poderoso y muy técnica.

“Tenia una herida para el primer evento, pero ese momento out me permito de darme cuenta de lo bueno que era mi trabajo, como me gustaba. Quise volver para ganar y competir. Consigue una 3ra plaza a Bells, estoy segura que estaré mas constante durante toda la temporada.” Nos dice Jessi.
