Corona Dairyland Surf Classic to run at Sheboygan Wisconsin
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 August, 2008 : - - Sheboygan, Wisconsin -- Hundreds of dudes and wahines will be shreddin’ the break Labor Day weekend – in Wisconsin! Yes, the 'Third Coast' is home to largest population of freshwater surfers in the world. Coastal surfers from as far away as Hawaii will travel to the Midwest to ride the waves of Lake Michigan Saturday, August 30, when Sheboygan, Wisconsin, hosts the 20th annual Corona Dairyland Surf Classic.
Sheboygan, also known as the “Malibu of the Midwest,” boasts 22 different breaks on its five-mile coastline and is considered the No. 1 spot for freshwater surfing in the world. The waves, which can be chest-to-shoulder high, are created by wind rather than the tide. Labor Day weekend marks the start of the Great Lakes surfing season, which runs from fall to early winter, with waves getting bigger as the weather gets cooler.
The Corona Dairyland Surf Classic consists of a weekend of surfing events and festivities including the paddle relay and paddle competition, while surfboard art and beach vendors add to the Surf City attitude that takes over the town. NEW this year, Surf Classic organizers have added a stand-up paddle (SUP) surfing competition.
A hard-core workout, professional surfers originally used it in off-season training, but after being picked up by celebrities, weekend warriors and enthusiasts looking for globally conscious, green sports, it’s gained such popularity that surf shops say they can’t keep up with the demand.
The Surf Classic was founded in 1988 by twin brothers Larry “Longboard” and Lee “Waterflea” Williams, 40-year veterans of freshwater surfing and lifelong residents of Sheboygan. Both were featured in the surf documentaries Step Into Liquid and Unsalted. More information can be found online.
