NSSA Gold Coast Event One scores fun Mandalay Beach

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 August, 2008 : - - School’s back in session and so is the NSSA.  Sticking with tradition, NSSA opening day on the west coast kicked off with the Gold Coast Conference event #1 at Oxnard’s Mandalay Beach.  The waves were super fun throughout most of the day with waist to chest high peaks however the notorious afternoon onshores brought about windswept conditions for the finals.

Nevertheless the waves stayed contestable as all the competitors were fired up and ready to make an early jump to the top of the rankings in the double rated event.

And no one was more ready than Conrad Carr who had his run of the place.  The 16-year-old from Malibu was the performer of the day tearing up Mandalay’s chest high peaks and nailing double wins in the Men’s and Juniors finals.  Conrad took control of the Juniors final defeating Santa Cruz up-and-comer Shaun Burns by a considerable margin of 15.0-9.5.

With the onshore winds picking up and conditions getting trickier prior to the Men’s final, Conrad maintained his rhythm and managed to pick off a couple solid scores to edge out defending Conference champion Kokoro Tomatsuri 11.0-10.0 for his second triumph of the event.  In his first year in the Explorer Boys division, Kadin Panesi wasted no time posting his first win of the year with an impressive 14.5 heat total.

Kei Kobayashi took the Menehuene victory 10.0-8.5 over runner-up Patrick Curren (youngest son of three-time World Champion Tom Curren).  Patrick also stepped it up a division, placing fourth in the Boys final.  Not resting on any laurels, reigning National Super Seniors Champion Robert Weiner who dominated his final at the Nationals with a perfect 10 wave score, set the pace for the new season amassing the highest point total of the event.

Robert was on fire in the Seniors final posting an excellent 17.0 total score and clinching the victory over six-time National Champion Mike Lamm.  Oxnard local Tim Burrows took the Masters while Keenan Reeser claimed her first NSSA win in the Women's.  Rory Golden showed great form taking first in the Longboard and NSSA newcomer Frankie Harrer won the Girls.

COMING UP IN CALI: Gold Coast Conference event #2 and #3 doubleheader at Port Hueneme on August 30-31.  The Southwest Conference Open Season kicks off with event #1 September 6-7 at HB’s 9th Street sandbar.  The Southwest Conference Explorer Season opens up in Mission Beach on September 13-14.
