The Orphaned Whale Response Unit formed in Australia
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 August, 2008 : - -The Orphaned Whale Response Unit has been formed to provide Australia with a network of dedicated professionals and volunteers coordinated to respond to young orphaned whales and their care, rehabilitation and release. Our aim is to prevent any tragedy like that of ‘Colette’ the baby humpback Whale in Pittwater Harbour, August 2008, ever happening again in Australian waters, and where possible, the world. Many Australians felt helpless and frustrated with what had happened to Colette. Our friends of the ocean and like minded organizations (NPWS/ORCA/SeaWorld on the Gold Coast) needed an extra hand to turn to, which was unfortunately no where to be seen, until now! The right formula, a reputable vet, a reputable marine biologist, a feeding apparatus, a tried and tested plan and a team of dedicated volunteers to work around the clock at no expense to the Australian taxpayer was no where to be seen. No where to be seen until now. Responding not just to orphaned humpbacks Our goal is to provide a coordinated response with practical resources to accommodate the assessment (and protection of), veterinary care, rehabilitation and release of all marine animals on Australian shores and shorelines, including but not limited to: Whales of all species Dolphins Sea Lions and Seals Sea Turtles However in getting this project off the ground and to a robust state, we will be focusing on whales first, then dolphins, sea lions and last but not least sea turtles. The reason being that at present there is nothing of this level in place for our cetacean friends of the ocean. Your feedback and past experiences to save future lives By creating a database through this website where the general public (and professionals) can document the finding of any marine animal on Australian shores and shorelines and recording all relevant information we will create an information hub and response network that will share all veterinary care, treatment methods, milk formulations, feeding techniques, weight charts, treatment containment methods, release programs etc with all organizations worldwide who are acting for the benefit of Marine Life. Sea Shepherd Chapters spreading the safety net Would like to touch base with your org. Please forward on this website for sightings etc and feedback on 'Collette'. We want to hear everyones opinion. www.orphanedwhales.org
