Stephanie Gilmore wins the Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle     > Francaise ci-dessous

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 August, 2008 : - - Seignosse - - Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, reigning ASP Women’s World Champion, has claimed the 2008 Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle title, defeating fellow finalist Layne Beachley (AUS), 36, in clean two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at Les Bourdaines in Seignosse, and regaining the ratings lead in the hunt for the 2008 ASP Women’s World Title.

Event No. 3 of 8 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle was treated to two full days of action, culminating in the stunning Final between the two Australian icons. Gilmore exercised discretion in the Final, slotting herself in picturesque French barrels and executing critical turns to net a solid 16.66 out of a possible 20 while her compatriot Beachley searched for waves that didn’t offer sufficient scoring potential.

“I was fortunate to get those few waves out at the beginning that allowed me to get a few maneuvers in,” Gilmore said. “It was really tough out there – really fast and racy and not easy to get scores.  Unfortunately for Layne, she wasn’t able to find a wave she could really open up on.”

Despite a disappointing 9th place finish in the season opener at home on the Gold Coast, Gilmore has since rebounded, claiming her second event win in a row and rocketing into the ratings lead in the race for the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour.

“I’m absolutely fired up,” Gilmore said. “I had a bit of a wobbly start to the year, but I’ve had two really good events in a row and to be back on top is an amazing feeling. It’s my second year on tour and I’m looking to defend my title. I’m excited to be where I’m at heading into the next few events.”

Beachley, former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion, was disappointed that she was unable to pull out the win, but her runner-up finish moves the phenomenal natural-footer from 5th to 3rd on the ASP Women’s World Tour rankings, putting her well within striking distance of the 2008 ASP Women’s World Title.

“I’m really proud of Steph – she’s been the form surfer all event and she deserved the win,” Beachley said. “I’m just happy that I can still hang with the young girls and to finish in the Final and move up to third is a great place to be heading into the back half of the season.”

Lee Ann Curren (FRA), 19, winner of the Rip Curl Pro Junior and wildcard into the Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle, was in sterling form all event, first upsetting former ASP Women’s World Tour No. 1 Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 25, and then taking down Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS), 22, in the Quarterfinals before falling short against Beachley.

“Winning the ASP Pro Junior event the other day and gaining entry into the Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle was one of the best wins of my career,” Curren said. “To be able to compete against the best girls in the world and to finish third is the best finish of my career. I wish things could have gone the other way in that heat but they didn’t and I am still very, very happy to finish third.”

Silvana Lima (BRA), last year’s ASP Women’s World No. 3, shoots up to ASP World No. 6 from 11 with her equal 3rd place performance, despite falling short to eventual winner Gilmore in the Semifinals.

“There wasn’t anything I could do out there,” Lima said. “Steph (Gilmore) got two waves and there wasn’t really anything else that came through. I’m still happy with a 3rd and I feel like I’m surfing good so I’m happy with my finish here and the next event’s in Brazil so I’m happy to head home.”

Gilmore remporte le Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle et prends la première place du classement ASP

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 August, 2008 : - - Seignosse France -- Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20 ans, championne du monde en titre, remporte la finale du Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle 2008, en battant sa copine Layne Beachley (AUS), 36 ans, dans des bonnes conditions de 1mètre sur le spot des Bourdaines à Seignosse. Elle passe ainsi en tête du classement et en route une fois de plus pour le titre de championne du monde.
 
Le Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle, 3ème étape du circuit ASP Women's World Tour, s'est déroulé sur deux journées remplies d'actions, en terminant sur une superbe finale entre les deux icones australiennes.
 
Gilmore a été discrète en début de finale, mais elle est parvenue à se glisser dans de jolis tubes et à enchainer des manœuvres radicales pour scorer un gros total de 16.66 points sur 20 possible, alors que sa compatriote Beachley était à la recherche de vagues n'offrant que peu de potentiel pour scorer.
 
"J'ai eu de la chance d'avoir quelques bonnes vagues en début de série qui m'ont permi d’enchainer quelques bonnes manœuvres" commente Gilmore. « Les conditions étaient difficiles ; des vagues très rapides n'offrant pas un gros potentiel de points. Malheureusement pour Layne, elle n'a pas réussi à trouver la bonne vague pour scorer.»
 
Malgré une décevante 9ème place dans la première épreuve de la saison sur le Gold Coast, Gilmore est remontée au classement en remportant 2 compétitions d'affilées et reste en lice pour le titre mondial.
 
" Je suis super motivée" déclare Gilmore. « Je n'ai pas très bien commencé la saison, mais j'ai fait deux super résultats d'affilés et c'est incroyable d'être à nouveau en haut du classement. C'est ma deuxième année sur le tour et j'ai bien l'intention de défendre mon titre. Je suis excitée et impatiente de concourir sur les prochaines compétitions ».
 
Beachley, sept fois championne du monde ASP, a été déçue de ne pas remporter la finale, mais elle passe quand même de la 5ème à la 3ème place du classement ASP Women’s World Tour et se rapproche ainsi un peu plus prés du titre mondial.
 
"Je suis vraiment fière de Steph, elle a dominée toute la compétition et elle méritait vraiment de gagner" déclare Beachley. « Je suis contente de pouvoir encore surfer contre des jeunes surfeuses en finale. C'est super de remonter à la 2ème place à la moitié de la saison. »
 
Lee Ann Curren (FRA), 19 ans, vainqueur du Rip Curl Pro Junior et wildcard pour le Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle, était en super forme pendant toute la compétition. Elle a éliminé l'ancienne numéro 1 du classement ASP Women, la péruvienne Sofia Mulanovitch, 25 ans, ainsi que l'australienne Jessi Miley-Dyer, 22 ans, en quart de finale avant de s'incliner face à Beachley.
 
" Remporter le Pro Junior ASP et gagner une wildcard pour le Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle, ont été unes des plus belles victoires de ma carrière. » commente Curren. « Avoir la chance de surfer contre les meilleures filles du monde et terminer 3ème est le meilleur résultat de ma carrière. J'aurais aimé gagner ma série mais je suis quand même super contente de finir 3ème. »
 
Silvana Lima (BRA), numéro 3 du tour ASP l'année dernière, est passée de la 11ème à la 6ème place du classement avec une 3ème place ex-æquo, en perdant de peu contre Gilmore en demi finale.
 
"J'ai pas réussi à faire grand chose pendant ma série" déclare Lima. Steph (Gilmore) a eu deux vagues et ensuite il n'y a plus eu beaucoup de vagues. Je suis quand même contente de ma 3ème place et je me sens bien dans mon surf en ce moment. Je suis contente de mon résultat ici et la prochaine compétition est au Brésil, donc je suis contente de rentrer à la maison. »
 
La prochaine épreuve du tour ASP Women’s 2008 sera le Billabong Girls Pro Rio du 10 au 28 Septembre 2008.
